A scorching Easter weekend
Happy Easter, everyone! I don't know how the weather was in other parts of the country, but we had a really hot weekend. Los Angeles is never really cold anyway, but it was in the high 80s yesterday and today. All the sunshine was great, but even I thought it was a bit too hot (and I love hot weather).
This weekend, Johnny, Jack and I mostly laid low. I know I have a busy work week ahead (that's an understatement, too), so I mostly I just wanted to relax, spend time with my three boys and catch up on some rest. Saturday, we did make a big outing to Babies R Us. Jack's growing out of his infant gear, so we got him a "big boy" car seat (the Britax Marathon), a Maclaren Quest stroller (more lightweight and compact than the Graco one that his infant car seat snapped into), one of those grocery shopping cart seat covers, some more feeding spoons and bowls and some babyproofing gear (socket covers, wall anchors, etc.). Thank goodness we had some very generous relatives and friends who gave us Babies R Us gift cards up the wazoo. Our total spend on Saturday was $650, but we actually walked out with gift card money to spare. Thank you!
The good news is that we won't need to spend anything else on baby gear for a long time to come ... and baby #2 can reuse a lot of this stuff. Was having babies always this expensive? What did cave people do? The scary thing is that Johnny and I stick to the basics for the most part, because we don't have a lot of room in our apartment. For instance, we don't have a bassinette, infant swing or separate changing table (I change Jack on top of his little dresser). I hesitate to think what people who go all out must spend! I'll have to resist the urge to buy brand new stuff for the next baby. You all will have to remind me of this!We didn't do anything special today because Johnny and I aren't particularly religious (so we didn't participate in any church-based activities for Easter), and although Easter is a fun holiday, Jack is too young to do Easter egg hunts and all other things -- just wait a couple of years! We can't wait to dye Easter eggs, put together Easter baskets and basically relive our childhoods.
We went out to brunch, then took advantage of the nice weather by going to the park. There were lots of families having Easter picnics, and Jack loved watching everyone! Besides that, we just relaxed. I did go to Bar Method this morning, and last night I made another few batches of baby food. Jack's been going through food like crazy, so I wanted to stock up. I made stewed strawberries (to mix with mashed bananas and yogurt for dessert); chicken liver with potato, carrots and apple;two batches of braised beef (Jack's favorite meat!); one batch of chicken breast with sweet potato and apple; butternut squash with cheddar cheese, sauteed tomatoes and tiny pasta stars; and cauliflower, carrots and zucchini with tomato and cheddar cheese sauce. This ought to last him a good month or so! Thank goodness for the Magic Bullet.
OK, I think that's enough narration of our uneventful (but fun) weekend. Here are some pictures of Jack!

He's not sure about this use of the orange ring
Getting a jump start on his rock star career
Lately, Jack's been going after our water glasses whenever we drink water. While we were out at lunch on Saturday, we let him take a few sips from our glasses. This mostly results in sputtering, but he does manage to get a few mouthfuls down!

OK ... time to fold some laundry, then get to bed. Wish me luck this week!

Hi bev! Look how he's grown! you're going to have to teach me how to make and combine all those foods for baby food when the day comes!
We're getting the Britax Marathon too when Lily grows out of the infant one, and some of my co-workers got us the exact same Maclaren umbrella stroller (color and all) for my work shower! I'm looking forward to when she can get to the size to start using that too!
Wow - what a heat wave! It was a little colder here than it normally is, but I can't complain. People back in Illinois have the right to do that long before us. They've had a miserable late fall through early spring period.
Good luck this week!!
Sorry work will be stressful this week
I will be on travel status again Tuesday-Friday and for the next three weeks as well. This is my "travel" time of year. I really hate it!
It snowed a bit in Indiana... no hot weather for us
Baby supplies are expensive! Though, Babies R Us isn't priced the lowest, either. So glad you had all of those gift cards!!!
BEVERLY: You guys have to come to NYC, i can't wait to meet Jack OMG....I love this kid. He reminds me of adrian. Yes he is growing up really fast and sure asks like a "little man", drinking from a glass and getting new gear. He is really growing.
Im glad you has lovely weather, I have been dying to take Adrian out for a stroll but being that NYC is so cold I can never do that....i can't wait for it to get hotter.
Yes and I have to agree baby stuff are expensive. Which reminds me its time for me to clean out his dresser draws, because, he growing out of his old clothes even though some looks new, he only wore the once. Adrian hasn't grown like Jack, he still where some 6 months or 6-9 months clothing even though he'll be nine months in a couple of days, now he is wearing 6-12months (well some clothing says that) and some 9 months. as for the stroller, I have this graco travel system and that stroller probably weight more then I do (hypothetically speaking). So I understand you completely.
Give my regards to the hubby and give Jack a kissy kissy for me.

I am so jealous! We haven't had 80 degree weather since last summer! It was freezing in Kansas on Easter! Ugh. I wish I lived where you live..so not fair! lol
Adorable pictures, as usual. And yay for the lovely weather - happy spring!
Thanks for the get-well wishes. Beverly I don't think I've ever been more sick or ever been in this much pain. It's been absolutely awful. But I'm happy to say I'm on the mend!!! Little by little!
I know I say this every single time...but he is the cutest baby EVER. Seriously! I love the one of him cracking up while Atari is keeping a watchful, if sleepy, eye on him! So cute!
I think I live like a caveman since I'm the most practical mom out there, at least amongst my friends. I take whatever hand me downs I can (especially baby gear), and don't spoil my kids at all. The only think I'm missing is cloth diapers.
Since I've been making so much baby food lately, I'm so glad you just listed everything you made for him this weekend! I'm going to try to copy some of those recipes -- I need some new ideas! (everything except for the chicken liver of course - yuck!
) And do you have the recipe of the braised beef somewhere?
I'm jealous of your mini-heatwave! I refused to leave the apartment on Sunday because the weather was so horrible - freezing wind, rain, and sleet. Yuck.
Jack always looks so happy. Especially when eating braised beef. Mmmm... beef
it was a beautiful easter sunday here in houston, sunny and cool about 68-70 degrees.
i just love the pictures of jack, he's sosososososoos cute! i even called my husband over to show him jack's picture. he just asked me who the baby was and if i know you guys. i don't personally but still enjoy reading your blogs, and especially jack's cheerful smiles.
heheehehe
RYC: Thanks! I know just what you mean- I love Friday nights because the whole weekend lies ahead!
Jack is just as cute as ever- I like how he and Atari hang out on the floor together! It sounds like you'll had a nice weekend- I'm a little jealous of the warm weather but I know once it gets hot here and the VA humidity sets in I'll be wishing it was back in the 60s! I like the new stroller too- it looks very sporty! Have a good week!
He's so cute! I wonder the same thing about the baby things, what does everyone do!?!
I think it's really neat that you make your own baby food, I would love to do that. (one day)
As much as I hate hot weather, I can't say that I wouldn't want to trade places with you given that it is still in the 30s here in Ann Arbor. I love that picture of him with the guitar; he even knew where to put his hands! Braised beef? Yum! Is that the Asian type or the Western one? My mom makes a delicious braised beef stew (niu nan fan) and even though I have the recipe for years, I still haven't tried to do it myself. I think I'm afraid of disappointments when I realize that it is just not the same.
I LOVE your Maclaren!!! Is the flap extending so he can keep his feet up!? Mine doesn't do that
Or maybe Hannah's legs are just too heavy for it?
Sorry that you're going to be so busy at work...that stinks!!!
I would have looooved warmer weather for Easter. It was windy and about 40 degrees here
I had on a nice Spring dress and a big winter jacket
Oh how I miss being in Florida!
I love the pictures of Jack. I especially like the second one of him crawling...is he laughing at something? And the one of him drinking out of the glass is adorable. Is he using a sippy cup yet?
