  • Little baldie, v. 2

Those of you who've been reading my blog for a while will remember when Jack got his head shaved at seven months old. It's a traditional Chinese rite of passage for baby boys when they're around six months old. Well, exactly two years later, it's Derek's turn! We took him to First Cut for Kids in Palos Verdes this afternoon to buzz off his hair.

Hmm, what fun experience am I about to have?

I'm not so sure about this!
    February 015

No, I definitely don't like it!

Don't worry, it really isn't a painful experience. I think Derek was just put off by the buzzing and the fact that something was moving around on his head. He took the whole thing much more calmly than Jack, though (no surprise there, as Derek is more reserved overall). He cried intermittently but was pretty cooperative.

All right, let's just get it over with

We brought along the frog hat that Johnny's parents had given Jack to keep Derek's head warm as we ate dinner afterward. Please excuse the Halloween bib. It's the second-child thing. With Jack, I would never have been caught dead using a clearly off-season bib. With Derek, I'm like, "Eh, it'll just get covered in baby food anyway."

    What ... have ... you ... done ... to ... me?

By the time we got home, Derek was quite jolly again.

I think he's so cute without hair! With Jack, I was a little sad on hair-shaving day. For one thing, he had such long, luscious locks. With Derek, I'm mostly just excited -- it means the first year is almost half over (as much as I adore Derek, I can't wait until he's a little toddler and can play more actively with Jack. I know, I'll regret saying that someday soon), and his baby hair was kind of uneven. It was shorter on top and longer on the sides, and this way it'll get a chance to grow in uniformly. Plus, now he gets to use all the cute baby hats I have from Jack's infancy. Win-win!

Just for fun, here's a picture of Jack immediately post-shaving. So interesting to see the similarities and differences between the two boys at the exact same age. It's so clear (to me) that they have different personalities, even from these pictures.

Oh, and if you want a laugh, check out this entry, which features Johnny's Photoshop handiwork with pictures of Jack's shaven head.

Off to start my weekend. Should be a fun one -- Sunday is Chinese New Year (in addition to Valentine's Day, of course), so we're having hot pot tomorrow night after the kids go to bed with my mom, June and Charles. Sunday night, Johnny and I are going on a triple date with June, Charles, Lana and Philip -- we'll be consuming vast quantities of meat at a churrascaria (Brazilian BBQ). I'm all for hot waiters serving me fine cuts of meat. Then we'll be watching Valentine's Day. Catch you all next week!

  • Aww your "Little Baldie" is sooooo cute bald or with hair! Thanks for showing those pictures, I loved looking at them. That is so neat that both him and Jack have such different personalities. Both of your kiddos are adorable Beverly! You definitely have the perfect little family. I love the frog hat too. I wonder if we have any traditions in the filipino culture; I'm gonna ask my mom. They shaved my sister's head when she was a baby, but I think its b/c her hair was uneven-ha. Enjoy Chines New Year and V-day. Sounds like so much fun! I'm snowed in, so I'll be stuck at home. I didn't have plans this year anyway! Oh and I can't wait to watch Valentine's Day! Great cast.

  • Wow, it's funny looking at the Derek versus Jack comparison. At first glance, they look so similar. But little details are different, and they just sort of carry themselves differently. In that last picture in this entry, or in pictures like this one, Jack looks adorable but very baby-ish. In that bathtub picture Derek just seems so... intelligent. Like he's in the process of reading your mind or something.

Hmm... if I were to Photoshop Derek's bald head onto famous characters, the first one I'd start with would be Professor X. :)

  • He is adorable! And omg, I was cracking up laughing re-reading the photoshop post.  LOL.  Too funny!

  • The Avatar:  The Last Airbender one just about slayed me.  LOL!!!!  He looks adorable, as always!

  • I feel kinda bad for saying this... but I think the 3rd picture is So cute...

  • I never knew that. What a cool thing. I know that Hindi culture in India does that around their 1st birthday. He looks so sweet in those pictures, awww.

  • way cute!!  I love the bathtime picture.  And having seen Johnny's photoshopping, I have to admit, I DID think of Aang.  :)
