  • First Day of Preschool

Jack started preschool today! He'll be going every Tuesday and Thursday morning (9 a.m. to noon). We dropped him off, and I stayed for about 15 minutes. Right away, he started playing with the toys, and when I went to say goodbye to him, he eagerly showed me that he was cooking an apple (a toy apple) in the (plastic) microwave. I said to him, "Mommy's going to go home, OK? You stay here and have fun, and I'll be back for you in a couple of hours." Jack didn't even look at me. He kept playing with his toy food and said cheerfully, "OK, Mommy! Bye, Mommy!" I almost cried! When I left, he didn't even look back. I waited outside the classroom with my mom and Derek for a little bit in case Jack melted down (the teacher's idea), but nope, Jack did not look around for me at all. The teacher had thought maybe he'd cling a bit since it's his first time in this sort of environment, but apparently not.

I got to pickup early today, and Jack was happy to see me. He informed me that he had "a great time, Mommy!", that he ate apples and water for a snack, and that he had new friends. When I asked him what his friends' names were, he said, "Jack, Jack, Jack ... and Jack!" Um ... OK. His teacher said that they painted, and Jack did great sharing toys with other kids, and even went potty. He didn't ask her to go, but he did go when she reminded him.

When Jack got home, he wolfed down four chicken nuggets, a big handful of peas, a string cheese and a sippy cup of milk (about nine ounces). Whew! Now he's napping. Although seeing Jack in a classroom, with his own cubby, made me and Johnny a bit wistful, I'm also very proud of my independent, friendly big boy. I know this is good for him, to be doing something other than playing with his same old toys or watching PBS Kids and Playhouse Disney all morning. It's only twice a week, but it still feels like a big transition! We'll see how he does on Thursday.

I'll have to add some pictures later. Hope everyone's having a great week!

  • I LOVE it!  I'm so glad he had such a good experience.  My kids were the exact same way at the childcare room at the Y, it was wild!  I had to tear them away when it was time to leave.  We have had a little bit of extra crankiness post-gym sometimes, but not bad.  I hope it stays this good, and it sounds like an awesome experience all around.

  • Awww, Jack is growing up! I'm so glad he is enjoying preschool, you must be so proud mommy. :o ) I would've almost cried too when dropping him off. Can't wait to see pics!

  • Wow, Jack is super brave!  I wasn't even like that.  :)

  • I am glad that he did so well! i am sure he will have lots of fun.

  • That's awesome Beverly that Jack was able to adjust. I know for Brandon it took him close to two months to not cry when he gets dropped off at preschool. He is there full time.

  • Awww, I don't know what to say about Jack's ease in attending his first day of preschool; I can see myself having a similar ambivalence as you, but maybe that's just evidence to show his trust and independence, both a result of you and Jonny's good parenting!.  I laughed out loud when I heard how all his friends all share the same name Jack! Maybe there was one other Jack...?

  • That's a great first day. What a relief! Hopefully he has as much fun each time and doesn't give you hell. Sometimes it gets worse. But it's always comforting when they miss you too. ;)

  • awww, even though he adjusted so well I know inside you want him to cling to you a little bit more, just because you want to feel that you are so impt to him....awww, but good for him!

  • Hahaha, that's sooo cute! Can't believe that he didn't even look for you.

  • He's growing up real fast!  Time really does fly when you're watching your kids huh?  But on the other hand, sounds like he really enjoyed class and making new friends which sounds great!  Hopefully he did great the 2nd time around too!  UPdates!

  • Hello from India! Sorry it's been so so long since I've commented. But I have followed a bit the last few months. I wanted to say congratulations on your home, and most of all, on the birth of Derek! Love the name :) And he is quite the handsome baby. What a huge change your family has experienced in the last two years. Finishing grad school, buying a house, having a baby, watching your first baby grow up and start school in such a short time: it must feel like a whirlwind. I hope you take moments to breathe before you jump into the next stage of life!
