Derek Is Home!
Today was a big day for us: Johnny and I brought Derek home from the hospital! The NICU had originally told us that Derek would need to stay for the entire seven-day course of antibiotics, which would have meant no homecoming for him until next Monday, whereas I came home yesterday. I was already devastated to go home without him, much less for almost a week! But, this morning they told us that the tests they ran showed that Derek never had an infection at all (grr), and that the fluid in his lungs had been reabsorbed. In other words, he was perfectly fine all along -- but I guess better safe than sorry. So, they discontinued the antibiotics and discharged him this afternoon. Yay!
Derek, all dressed in his coming home outfit
So tiny in Jack's infant car seat!
Jack was very excited to see his "dee-dee" (Mandarin for "little brother") again.
Yay, a new playmate!
Here's a cute video of the two brothers:
On a sad, poignant note, Johnny's grandfather, the namesake for Derek's middle name, passed away this morning. It didn't escape us that on the day we brought home a new life, one ended. Johnny's grandfather was a wonderful man who led a long, full life, and he'll be missed by many people. Johnny will be flying out for the funeral early next week; Jack, Derek and I will be there in spirit.
Good night, everyone.

aww, he's so tiny!!! yey that he's home!
Welcome home, little man! And that is the sweetest picture and video with Jack.
Same thing happened to Daniel, antibiotics "just in case" which they ended up discontinuing. Worked kind of hard to breathe and a little fluid, which he cleared up on his own. Isn't it frustrating?? But I'm glad he got sprung out of there before the full week!! Now you can just settle in at home.
And I'm so sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfather. I'm glad you were able to honor him, and I hope he was well enough to learn about his newest great-grandson. Best wishes to the whole family.
So sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfather. *hugs*
Derek is adorable, as always. I love love LOVE the big beaming smile on Jack's face looking at Derek in his carseat. So adorable!
Dee Dee - so cute!! He seems SO excited to have his brother home. They're going to be best buddies. He is just precious. -- So sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfather. Things like that really remind you of the full circle of life. I hope the family is doing okay. I'm sure it helps to have a little life to celebrate during their sadness.
So glad that he is home! And he is just gorgeous! And you're right - better safe than sorry, but I can imagine how frustrating that could be!
I'm so so sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfather. I can't imagine how hard that must be, especially when you are so thrilled with the birth of your son. My own grandfather passed away last December, and that was hard enough on me. Huge hugs to your family!!
Sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfather.
Glad to hear Derek got to go home early.
yay to derek coming home early! love jack's reaction to derek being home. you have a handful with 2 little boys, but they're gonna have so much fun with each other as they grow up together. oh btw, i loved that video of jack saying "fork", so that day i went home and asked my 2 yr old (she turned 2 in feb) to say it, but she said "fork" correctly and i was a little bummed about it cuz i was ready for her to say it the wrong way so i could laugh. oh well, i should've asked her sooner when she was younger.
i'm sorry about johnny's grandfather. such big emotions on both sides on the spectrum with derek's birth and johnny's grandfather's passing. cycle of life.
derek is pretty big in the picture! take care, mama!
Beverly, Derek is so cute! I love the video. I'm sorry to hear about Johnny's grandfathers.
Aww, I love all the pics and I'm glad to hear Derek is doing fine and was able to come home. What a wonderful little family you have!!! And in my limited mandarin, I do know dee-dee.
My mom taught me that when I was about 3 when they brought MY dee-dee home from the hospital.
