  • 36.5 Weeks ... Almost Time?

It's hard to believe, but as of this Saturday, I'll be 37 weeks ... full-term! Even to my pregnant-as-a-whale self, this pregnancy has simply flown by.

Today, I had my 36-week (really 36.5 week) appointment with the midwife. Everything checked out well -- fundus measuring right on track, blood pressure at 104/60, weight gain at 24 pounds total (probably won't gain much more from here on out, if my pregnancy with Jack serves as an accurate measure). Baby Surprise's heartbeat also sounded good. Usually, I don't have many questions for my midwife, but today I wanted to know when she thought I might deliver. See, for the past week and a half or so, I've been having two to three Braxton-Hicks contractions (that's "practice" contractions for those of you unfamiliar with the lingo ) an hour, even when I'm well-hydrated and sitting or laying down. I also feel pressure down where the baby's head is. Now, these could just be normal second-time mom (especially second-time mom who only had 15 months between pregnancies!) sensations, or maybe all moms wo have a head-down baby feel this way. With Jack, since he was head-up, his butt never dropped low into my pelvis, so I had no lower pressure. I also had very infrequent Braxton-Hicks contractions. In fact, I had no signs of impending labor with Jack until two or three days before labor began. I've read that the second time around, your body either prepares you for labor earlier with BH contractions, or that you're just more in tune with early labor signs. So, in short, what I've been feeling could mean nothing ... especially since I don't have a history of preterm labor (that's before 37 weeks). But, you all know what a worrier I am. Given that I'm not yet 37 weeks (shy by a few days, but still), and given that my mom's moving in this weekend, I really wouldn't like to deliver early. The main reason is that I don't want there to be any increased chance that Baby Surprise would have to go to the NICU. The secondary reason is that if the baby waits until my mom's all moved in and settled, then no one has to panic or make rushed arrangements for Jack when labor begins, no matter what time of day or night it is. Anyway, so today I peppered the midwife with questions about what happens if a baby is born just shy of 37 weeks, and what she thought my timetable might be.

Unlike my previous OB, my midwife does not do internal checks at 36 weeks. (She's one of five in the practice; I've seen all five.) The group is of the opinion that unless I'm in labor, it doesn't make much sense to do an internal check, since some women walk around at 1-2 cm dilated for weeks before delivery. And, if I'm not dilated, she doesn't want me to be lulled into a false sense that labor is far away. Made sense to me. However, she did determine that baby's head is engaged in my pelvis, that he's positioned correctly for birth and that given how I've been feeling, she wouldn't be surprised if I went into labor in the next two weeks. Given that, she went ahead and did my GBS swab today, instead of waiting until next week (since it's good for five weeks). She reassured me that she doesn't think it will happen before 37 weeks, since Jack came right on time, and that while second babies tend to come sooner, that doesn't mean coming so soon as to be preterm. She then said that if the baby were to arrive between now and Saturday, he would most likely be just fine, since he's a good size already. They wouldn't do anything to stop my labor if it were to start. She also advised me to guzzle as much water as I could, and spend lots of time laying on my left side. But, she ended the appointment by saying that she was sure she'd see me next week for my usual weekly checkup, so that's a relief.

So, we'll just wait and see! My bag is all packed, but again, I'd much rather wait it out. As uncomfortable as the BH contractions and the head pressure can be, I don't really mind being pregnant, and I know this is the last time I'll feel a baby wriggling around inside me. So (to a reasonable extent), Baby Surprise can take his sweet time. I'm definitely following the water-drinking advice, upping my usual daily consumption of 64 ounces to 96 ounces, at least. Not sure about the laying down ... that can happen after my mom moves in, but anyone who's been alone with a toddler for 10 hours a day knows the realities of resting while said toddler is awake. I think, though, I will start resting while Jack naps, instead of rushing to do my part-time work or house chores. Today during Jack's nap I baked and froze a lasagna for Johnny's consumption after the baby arrives, revised a draft of something I was writing for work, and folded Jack's clean laundry. Starting tomorrow, I think my number one priority during Jack's naps will be to get some shut-eye myself. I'll make sacrifices to keep the baby baking for a while longer.

Watch, now that I've said all this, the baby won't come out until 42 weeks. I think that might exceed even my tolerance for pregnancy. Everyone, tell the baby to stay put until this time next week, at least!

  • I'll pray for you so Baby S would stay in for another couple of weeks.  My god!  I can't believe how time just flew by.   Can't wait to hear about the new addition.

  • Wow, Beverly, is it almost time already?  This pregnancy has flown by so quickly!  I'm still in California - we'll be leaving on Thursday.  Did you get my email I sent you through Facebook?

  • oh wow, i can't believe it's already almost time! i'm sure baby #2 will stay put for another week and come just at the right time. until then, rest up A LOT mama~ it's going to a whirlwind once the little one arrives. i remember you mentioning that you're doing a VBAC, right? i hope all goes well and can't wait to meet the new addition~

  • i always love your long updates.  And to me, they're never long enough.  Love hearing about what's going on with you; always seems to be a lot AND interesting.

Crossing my fingers for you, Baby Surprise stay in!

You gotta explain to me why natural birth, no pain meds.  So I can grow some courage to do the same.  I head some times epidural can prolong delievery or other problems.

  • I've had BH contractions also! I'm only 30 weeks, and I was really shocked when I kept having them! I didn't get BH contractions until I was 39 weeks with Kailyn. I'll cross my fingers that your baby stays in for a couple more weeks! Which, by the way....when will we know the name? =)

  • Good lord, 36.5 weeks already?  Where did the time go?!  I know a good handful of people due in July, but that always seemed so far away.  Now... it's almost here!!!

And hey, you've made it past my kids' gestation, so you know you'll be just fine.

  • Wow, too much labor talk... brings back too many memories! (Uncomfortable memories I don't want to experience again)

I've been on both ends, my first was born at 42 weeks, second at 38 weeks. I don't really remember what it was like anymore. I mean I do remember, but don't think much about how everything was the last couple of weeks. You should relax, sleep as much as you can after your mom moves in because we all know how little sleep a newborn baby gives you!

I had to laugh when I read you were going to drink 96 oz of water a day. You're going to have to take bathroom breaks every 10 minutes! Take good care of yourself and please, get lots of rest!!!!

  • I can't believe due-day is so close!! I hope the baby stays nice and comfy for another few weeks. As you describe all these pre-labor symptoms, I think you'd be really amused by a show I was watching last night. It's called "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" on Discovery Health. Women who go through full-term pregnancies without ANY symptoms that they recognize as pregnancy. You should watch one if you see it's on... it'll at least give you a laugh ;)

  • @PeanutPuff - Yes, sorry I never replied! So forgetful these days. Sounds like a whirlwind for you, and we'll see each other next time! :) South El Monte is close to where my grandma's memorial site is, so I know it is a ways from me. The bonus is, next time you're out here, you can meet the new baby, too!

  • @Jenn - Oh, Jenn, I have seen that show! I can't help watching it, even though the ENTIRE time, I'm yelling at the TV: HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW YOU'RE PREGNANT, YOU IDIOT?! "Oh, I think my stomach is tightening because I ate something bad. Hmmm, come to think of it, the chicken I ate for dinner must be doing a whole tap dance in my abdomen. That's normal, right?" And what about the no period for 9 months part?! Doesn't strike anyone as weird? Sigh. Some people!

  • @My_Enigma_Heart - I will explain the natural birth thing, in another post to come very soon, I promise! I'll just say for now that it has less to do with baby's well-being than with what I want for myself.

    @storyofmylife87 - You'll find out the name when he's born! :)

  • awww, u are almost 37 weeks. even if baby arrives now, he'll be fine. i've been having BH contraction since the very beginning but nothing major or painful... these past few days though, i'm been feeling them a little stronger, but not taht stronger enough to open my cervix...

i am 33 weeks now and i just pray that baby will be in there til 37 weeks. anything after thath, I'M RELIEVED!!! right now, i try not to walk much and i try to relax....

yes, u should definetely drink more water!!! omg, i can't wait to hear your labor storyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

    good luck

  • It is so crazy how quickly time flies.  I know what you mean about not minding too much about being pregnant a little longer.  I know I tried to fill my days with everything Mya right before Fraser was born and things changed (and I didn't know if he'd be our last baby, and it's so sweet to feel the baby moving around).

I hope you got some rest today, busy mama.

  • @My_Enigma_Heart - Epidurals can either speed it up or slow it down, or not do anything at all.  Unfortunately you don't know which category you fall into until the time is there.  I had one, and I love love loved it.  It was a night and day difference, and the difference between me feeling unreal, unbearable pain to being able to laugh and joke around with people and actually 'enjoy' my labour.

I don't remember them putting it in, but I do remember telling the guy to get it in and that I didn't care if he paralyzed me, I wanted relief!  I was induced, so I didn't have the natural build up of endorphines to help with the labour.  I know a ton of Moms who've all done it natural, Phil's cousin did it at home in her bathtub lol.  I knew I was a sissy, and I wanted every relief known to man to help me. You'll be fine, no matter what the choices are.  You'll do whats best for you, and for your baby.

  • Can't believe it's almost THAT time!  I'm so so so so so excited!!!  Is someone going to update Xanga or Facebook so we'll know when Baby Surprise makes his debut?

  • @Elewen - You're funny ... "Is someone going to update Xanga or Facebook ... " OF COURSE! :) Who do you take me for? ;) We're taking the laptop to the hospital, just like we did with Jack, so I promise I will update my status. If I don't do it, Johnny will. I'll probably update my status on FB (and maybe do a short blog entry) whenever I head to the hospital, because if it's before when my leave from my PT job starts, I'll have to hop on to my work email and turn on my "I'm on mat leave" automatic message. I told my boss I was working until 39 weeks, and I think I might deliver before then, so anyway, as long as I'm on my work email before leaving for the hospital, I might as well update my FB status! So no worries. :)

BTW, great reply to Wa! You're absolutely right, whatever choice each woman makes that is right for her and her baby is the correct one. :)

  • :)   Yea soon baby surprise will be here!  :)

  • Jack reminds me of my nephew...they look a bit alike, hehe.  He's 2 1/2 and he's getting a lil brother in 2 weeks too(scheduled repeat csection at 39 wks).  For my 2nd child, I definitely want a vbac and midwide and hopefully a natural childbirth like you too!

  • Okay As always I need to be true you must be completely precise
