Crazy Weekend
I actually think that's an understatement -- I haven't yet come up with the right adjective to describe this weekend!
You may have read about the wildfires in California last week. There were the fires up near Santa Barbara, but over the weekend, wildfires also popped up in Orange County -- specifically, in Corona, Brea and Yorba Linda. As a California resident, I hear about these wildfires all the time, but I've never personally been affected by them ... until Saturday. My mom and sister live in Yorba Linda, and their condo nearly burned down!
Johnny, Jack and I had planned to stay overnight at my mom's on Saturday, because we were going to meet up with some friends in Irvine on Sunday, and it's much closer to drive from Yorba Linda to Irvine than it is from our place in West LA. We were on our way when we heard about the fire. It seemed pretty well-contained at that point, and we were already in the car, so I told my mom that we were still coming. After all, it seemed pretty unlikely that the fire would actually reach where she lived. When we arrived, we saw smoke over the hills, and helicopters flying overhead, dumping water on the fire. We went inside, and Charles and Johnny began making statements like, "Maybe we should pack up and leave." We saw a few neighbors packing up their cars, but for the most part, people were sticking around. June and I made fun of the boys for being such scaredy-cats. At this point, we couldn't see the flames.
All was well until about 5:30 p.m. We played with Jack, hung out and discussed which movie to watch after dinner. I was really tired and looking forward to putting Jack to bed and relaxing with the adults. At 6 p.m., I put Jack in his high chair and gave him the special dinner of delicious rice noodles that my mom had made for him. That was when Johnny and Charles proclaimed that you could see the fire from the living room window, and that the fire trucks were here. I ran to the living room, and while you couldn't see the flames, you could definitely see a firey orange-red glow from just beyond the next row of townhomes! It was supposed to be pitch black outside, since the sun had set, but instead everything was glowing, and it looked foggy out because of all the ashes. Johnny ran outside and spoke to the firefighters. We had to leave at that very moment.
Thank goodness Jack was a trooper. He sat in his high chair in the living room, eating his dinner all alone, while the rest of us frantically packed some stuff up.
Luckily, my mom is really organized, so all of her and my sister's important papers were already in a fireproof box, ready to go. It was hard to decide what to take -- none of my stuff is there, per se, but it's all our family's furniture, photo albums, my grandma's things, not to mention my mom and sister's clothes, TV, everyday items. Charles and Johnny made trips up and down stairs to pack up the cars -- our RAV4, my mom's Highlander, June's Mini Cooper and Charles' two-door. I wanted them to come to our place, but my mom decided that they should go over to my Aunt Kathy's, because she lives closer (but not in the realm of the fires), and it would be easier for them to come back and check on things if the freeways were closed. So we reluctantly parted ways. Jack was visibly scared, but he didn't cry -- he just frantically looked around as we all raced around. Johnny and I made the long, trafficky drive back to LA. The inside of our car smelled like a giant cigarette. While en route, I called June and learned that they had made a second trip back before going to Aunt Kathy's, to get my mom's prescriptions and some more of my grandma's things. The firefighters had left after everyone evacuated, and they could see the flames on the row of condos behind theirs! Fire was also approaching from a second side, and it was really hot out. So at that point, we were more than 99% certain that their condo would burn, and we were so heartbroken. All of our stuff, all of my grandma's things, would be gone.
After we got home, I put Jack in his crib (he didn't even wake up when I changed him into his PJs, he was so exhausted), and then just kind of sat around in a daze. I couldn't sleep, either. At 2 a.m. I sat up because a little voice in my head told me to call the condo and see if the answering machine still worked. I was so nervous as I waited five rings. Then I heard June's voice -- she's the one on the outgoing greeting. I've never been so happy to hear my sister's voice in my life! I woke Johnny up and asked him if that meant the condo was safe. He replied that that was likely because the electrical wiring would have been the first thing to go if the fire got to it. Woo-hoo! After that, I couldn't fall asleep. Finally I couldn't wait any longer, and at 7 a.m. I called my mom to tell her. Yesterday, she, June and Charles went back to their neighborhood, where police had cordoned off access to the homes. At 4 p.m., they were finally allowed in, where they found that everything was OK! It's truly miraculous that the firefighters stopped the fire right before it reached their condo. Johnny made a trip out there after we got that call from them, to deliver the stuff in our car, and mostly to see for himself that they were OK.
Thanks for reading, if you've made it this far! On a lighter note, I do have some pictures of Jack to share, taken in the last few days:
Jack being silly on the couch before bedtime
Jack making his monster face and playing upon waking up
Notice his wild hair? Well, since we're going to Michelle's wedding this weekend, we took him to Fantastic Sam's for a haircut yesterday afternoon while waiting for news from my mom and June. It turned out well!
New cut (in the last pic, Jack is holding a cheddar cheese stick, while Atari is practically drooling. Alas, Jack didn't share. He loves cheese sticks!)
And I also have two videos.
Here's Johnny making Jack laugh before bedtime. It's kind of long (1:15, I think), but the beginning is fun, and the very end is also cute -- Jack blows a kiss!
And here's a short one of Jack using the computer. I love how he looks at the screen after punching a few keys.
Hope you all had a safe weekend, away from any fires!

Again glad everyone is safe.
Yikes, how scary! I'm so glad everyone is OK.
OMG I am sooo glad your mom's condo was saved! How horrible to think it might have been gone and all the sentimental things that could have been lost. An angel was definitely watching over your family:)
And may I saw Jack is the cutest baby EVER. His cute little smile lights up my heart, awww, I love his new haircut...I just want to kiss his face...nom nom nom. hahaha.
Hugs to you and what a relief that everything is ok!
OMG Beverly, I was on the edge of my seat while reading your post. I'm so, so, so glad and relieved that your mom's condo did not burn down and you and your family are ok and safe!! I was watching the news earlier and its so sad that so many CA residents lost their homes due to the fires. I agree w/ Redapple, an angel was def. watching after you and your family.
)
On a lighter note, those videos of Jack are so cute! He is adorable and I love his laugh and its so cute at the end when he blows a kiss. The 2nd video is cute too-looks like he will be smart.

Wow! That was a crazy weekend! I'm glad you're all safe! Love the pics.. watch the videos later when Emilee finally goes to sleep. Arg.
First off, I LOVE THE MONSTER FACE!!!!
I just love Jack, PERIOD!
I think wildfires are so scary, but it is like I read on a crafter's blog the other day when her husband took pics of her looking out from her sister's backyard and you could see the flames about a half a mile away and no one seemed really worried...she said, "Wildfires for Californians are like tornadoes for those living in Kansas." But I inserted Mississippi into that sentence in place of Kansas. I am really not scared of when they say there are tornadoes around, even though about 7 times out of 10 they are coming straight for me.
It is just 'normal'. But I really hope that those fires get tamed soon. You'd think they would make it illegal to burn anything in California b/c of the way wildfires break out so easily.
And I am soooooo sooooooo soooooooooo glad that your Mom's condo is OK! OMG, that could have ended so badly.
Kids giggling is about the cutest sound ever. I could listen to that all day. - That IS a crazy weekend. When we lived in CA, we were always so near the wildfires but never had to evacuate. It's such a scary thing to imagine - losing everything in a fire and trying to get out at the right time so you're safe. I'm glad your family is okay.
Wow! That's amazing that their condo didn't burn. Talk about devine intervention!
Wildfires is just not a problem up here. We can get tornados, but basically the universe has to be in perfect cosmic alliance in order for it to happen. I suppose our bane is snow, it can get to epic proportions here!
Jack is cute, as always!
Beverly, I am so relieved to hear that your mom's condo was untouched! What a scary thing to be involved in. I can only imagine the heartbreak at the thought of losing other valuables in the house that you were not able to retrieve, but thank goodness that is far from your minds now and you don't have to worry...The pictures of Jack are adorable! How come Atari has a cone around his head? Did something happen recently?
@PeanutPuff - Cute new profile pic, Jody! And kudos on noticing Atari's cone.
He recently got a skin infection from boric acid that Johnny and I didn't vaccuum up too well from our carpet. Did I mention I hate carpet? Anyway, a while back, we thought Atari had fleas (and it turned out he didn't!), so we covered our carpet with a layer of boric acid powder, which was labeled SAFE for pets and children. We vaccuumed it up really well in all areas of the apartment ... except under our bed and Jack's crib. We didn't actually move those heavy pieces away to vacuum underneath. We figured the Dyson under-furniture attachment would be enough. Well, that's where Atari sleeps, and unbeknownst to us, he got a chemical burn in his crotch area (since it's not covered w/fur) from prolonged exposure to boric acid! We felt SO bad. He kept licking his crotch, and we thought that was what made it infected, but no, the vet said it was a chemical burn. Now it is all better, thank goodness, but we're keeping the cone on for a few days so Atari doesn't lick it just when it's all healed. Oh and we did move the bed and crib and vacuum with the actual Dyson (not just the attachment) underneath. We got one whole cylinder worth of the white powder. Poor dog. Stupid dog parents (that would be us.
)
Bev - I'm so glad you guys are OK!!
Phew, I got a little worried when you first mentioned the fire. I'm glad that your mom's house is fine and everything's safe. When we were out on Saturday for brunch, I saw that the sky was half brown. I didn't hear about the fire yet and actually asked the waiter if it was pollution. The waiter looked at me seriously and said, "you are joking right?" I felt so embarassed! Han and I had the "what should we save" conversation recently too, but realized that the chance of fire in downtown long beach is rather slim.
I love the video of Jack "using" the laptop. It's future geek in training! =)
I'm so glad that your family is OK. And the condo, too, though that is secondary.
And, thank you for sharing these adorable pix and videos of Jack. He is the perfect bland of you and Johnny: a mix of his parents' sense of humor and smarts, plus an inkling of Johnny's nerdiness...and I bet in a year or two you'll see his organization skills as well!
Beverly! I was sitting on the edge of my seat reading your post...had to skim to the end of post to see if everyone and the house was okay before I went back to read it! My goodness~ I'm so relieved that everyone is okay...and that your mom's home was spared! What an ordeal! Is the area safe now? Or are authorities advising people to move away from these "fire-prone" zones? Thank goodness you guys were all around to help pack things and offer your mom support as I'm sure she was feeling very distraught over the thought of losing her home and belongings! =(
On another note, HELLO! It's been SO long since we've talked! I did get your emails (a very belated Happy Birthday to you, by the way! hee hee <=) ) and I've been so bad about writing back. I think it's mainly cuz I'm not sure where to begin...so I've been putting it off for a while, and now it's just become a bit ridiculous about how much I need to recount. haha. Sorry! Anyhow, the most important thing to know I guess is that I'm doing well and everything is ok...will get around to writing you a proper email one of these days! In the meantime, I love checking up on your blog...xanga-stalking cute little Jack! =D
btw, I can't find your protected post...and my curiosity is killing me! haha
@spiffyears - EM!! That's strange. I'll make sure you are on my protected list. When you next check, you should be able to see it.
My parents live in Corona so I was concerned that the fires would reach them as well but luckily, they didn't and my parents didn't have to evacuate. But from what I heard, everywhere was really smoky for the longest time! Glad everything turned out okay!
I love the pictures of Jack and the (computer) keyboard. He likes keyboards, huh? (I'm thinking of the pictures of him playing the piano keyboard.
Have a great week!
