  • Vacation Time!

First, I want to thank everyone for all your concern and support after my last entry. Not only did you leave comments here, but I got a number of caring emails and comments on Facebook, too. I haven't had a chance to reply to everyone, but I am really appreciative. It was a like one giant group hug!

I was feeling shaken up for a few days after the incident, but am doing better now. My foot is completely OK; I've even run a couple of times this week, just short runs -- 3.5 miles and 2 miles -- and I've done one session of Bar Method. I haven't taken Jack to the park because it's the workweek, but we might go this afternoon, in which case I'll drive.

I'm wrapping this up at work today. We get out early this afternoon, and then it's vacation time! Yay! We haven't gone away on vacation for quite a while. In fact, I haven't taken vacation since I got back from maternity leave in November. It may not be the best timing, considering the fact that I only have a month left here, but I've earned the time, and we need to have some time off for a variety of reasons! Tonight, we fly the red-eye to Detroit. When we arrive, we will pick up our rental car and drive four hours (I love road trips!) to my in-laws' summer home in the woods in northern lower Michigan. It's a very relaxing place, with nice people, and it's beautiful. We'll be right between Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake, so there will be a lot of lounging by the "beach." I plan to read (I picked up two Jodi Picoult books yesterday), eat ice cream, spend lots of quality time with family and friends and keep up with my half-marathon training (at least half the time!). It will be a full house. Besides my in-laws, Chris and Victoria will also be there with our niece Maddie, and our friends Shannon and Will will arrive Sunday with their daughter Audrey. The three babies are meeting for the first time. Audrey is 16 months old, Jack is almost a year old and Maddie is almost eight months. Fun!

I was up until 1 a.m. last night, packing and cleaning the apartment. It's amazing how many things I had to pack for Jack. Don't make fun of me, but I made a spreadsheet yesterday to organize my packing list. Down the left side, I listed each day that we would be gone. Then I had two columns going across the top, one for me and one for Jack. In each cell, I listed the outfits and things Jack and I would need each day of the trip. I then had a category at the bottom called "Miscellaneous," where I listed the things that we might not need on a specific day, but were sure to need at some point, such as sunscreen, hats, bathing suits, swim diapers, recipes (for the things I'm making for Jack's first birthday party), etc. I'm so glad I made the list, because there were definitely things I would have forgotten otherwise. It also helped me pare down the things I was going to bring. For example, I went from 10 pairs of shoes to five. You might wonder where Johnny comes into play. He was in charge of his own packing ... I don't micromanage to that extent!

OK, I'm going to share a few recent pics of Jack. Enjoy! I'll try to update while I'm on vacation, but I may not be able to comment much.

Jack enjoys his favorite summer snack: Whole strawberries!

We got him his first birthday present early, since we can't lug this to Michigan: The bounce and spin zebra! I've wanted to get this for Jack ever since I saw that Shelly's daughter Hannah had one. I remember a video of her bouncing on it and saying "Uh-oh!" and thought it was SO cute. Jack's not to that point yet, but he really loves spinning the toys and making the zebra play music.

  • road trip is fun but with a 2 year old, it's hard. and how do u manange to read while u have a baby? carla disturbs me all the time so, it'll take me mths to finish a book...

well, have a fun one in michigan!

  • jack's hair grew a lot from the time u shaved it...

  • @luvlyac - Well, I can't read while Jack is awake. I do most of my reading while he naps or before I go to bed!

  • I'm glad your foot seems to have come out relatively unscathed!

And, you're going to be so close to me when you come to Michigan.  If you ever go again, it'd be awesome to meet up.  I think Mya and Jack would have a blast together.

So glad Jack likes his birthday present, we're still trying to figure out what to get Mya.

    Enjoy your vacation!!

  • @TinkersWhimsy - I keep forgetting how close MI is to Canada! Yes, we will be there every summer for a stretch of time, so we will DEFINITELY meet up next time! I think we may be spending Xmas there this year as well. I'll be sure to email you before we go next time!

  • @bevconeal - I live about two hours from Traverse City, so definitely we'll have to try a hook-up sometime .

  • Happy vacation! :) Our boys are getting so big! I need to update my pictures soon!

I'm on a slow connection so I didn't read your previous entry, but I'm glad you're feeling better!! :)

  • I love that last pic! Kudos for you and hubs for driving 4 hours after a red eye flight! Enjoy your time with friends and family.

  • Enjoy your vacation!
I am so sorry to read about your last post. How very scary!! And how sad people just don't care. :(
I'm really glad that you weren't hurt badly!!

  • Oh my goodness, Beverly! How scary that incident must have been for you! I can understand why Johnny was beside himself - watching that happen to you and almost happen to Jack and Atari... Thank goodness you all are ok! I'm sorry I didn't see this until sooner...

Jack is still absolutely adorable No surprise there! That Zebra is cute. I'll have to join on the Xanga girls bandwagon and pick that up for Lily one of these days! We're getting to be a productive bunch, aren't we?

I'm glad you're feeling better, and that all is well despite the incident. Enjoy your holiday weekend!

  • I'm so glad you're doing better and that your foot is o.k.!!! I think this vacation will be wonderful for you guys

I don't think it's silly at all that you made a spreadsheet...babies and toddlers need soooooo much stuff!!! When we went to Disney we had tons of stuff to bring, but luckily we were able to go to a nearby grocery store and buy all the food, snacks and milk. I'm usually able to fit everything Hannah needs into her big duffel diaper bag and then we carry it on so I have everything she needs on the plane. I imagine once the new baby comes we won't be doing any plane traveling for quite awhile

I love the pictures The one of Jack eating the strawberry and the last one of him in the bath are so cute! He will love the zebra!!!

  • omg! jack is SO cute! i haven't seen him (or you) for so long :( it's too bad i couldn't catch you guys at the airport yesterday :(

  • His scrunchie faces are so cute! Awww. I hope you have a wonderful vacation. That kind of planning will really come in handy so you're not stuck there wishing you had packed something.

  • hi beverly! i love the pics of jack! he's so adorable! hope you are having a good time on your vacation!  we'll talk more when you get back...when is that, anyway?

  • Haha, there I was writing an email to you asking some silly bank questions, not realizing that you were off on vacation! Anyway, if you haven't checked your email yet, don't worry about it as I think we've decided to go with WAMU because of their online special.

You can count on me for not making fun of you because ahem... I have THREE spreadsheets for traveling/packing, one for international travel, one for domestic plane trip, and one for car trip! In addition to that, I have packing lists for each of my pets... So don't feel bad, there are worse micromanaging spreadsheet-lovers out there like me.

I love Jodi Picoult for traveling! She's my preferred author when I'm on a long flight. Which books did you pick up? If you have 19 minutes by any chance, I'd love to borrow it after I move there. That's been on my to read list for a while. Anyway, hope you are having fun!

  • Oh wow, I'm glad that all of you are ok and nobody got hurt from the accident.

  • @noraelle - Hey! So sorry I haven't had a chance to answer your email yet. I'm borrowing my friend Shannon's computer so I can't stay on long. I apologize for not being there to answer your question about the bank. We use Citibank, but we've also heard great things about WaMu.

I got The Pact, which I loved and cried during. Now I"m reading My Sister's Keeper. I think I will buy the 10th Circle and 19 Minutes, which you can definitely borrow!

  • @bevconeal - My Sister's Keeper was what got me hooked to her writing! I haven't read The Pact yet, will need to check it out!
