  • A Jack-Centric Entry

Although most of my blog entries mention Jack (and of course feature lots of pictures of him), it's been a while since I reported solely on my boy, his development, latest interests, etc. I figured I should document these things before I forget. So here we go!

Jack is now 11 months and one week old, and he:

    • Has seven teeth -- three on the bottom, four along the top.
    • Is down to just two bottles a day (from four) -- he has a breakfast bottle and a post-morning-nap bottle. He takes a sippy cup with lunch and dinner. Looks like we are on track to be down to just one bottle (or maybe none?) by his first birthday. I'm not too anxious about taking away bottles completely by one, but I figured we would transition slowly, and it seems to be working. Jack's been playing around with sippy cups since he was six months old (when he started solids), but in the last couple of months, has really begun drinking in earnest from them.
    • Enjoys some whole milk. Since he's supposed to start on whole milk at 12 months, we've been adding some whole milk (the kind spiked with DHA, for extra brain power ) to his formula for the last couple of weeks. He doesn't really seem to notice a difference -- he guzzles it down just the same.
    • Is eating more table foods. I am still making purees (but much chunkier ones now) for him, but now Jack also has grilled cheese sandwiches (cut-up into small pieces, of course), pita, hummus or whatever else we're eating.
    • Is so ready to walk! He only holds on with one hand while cruising now, and it's with a pretty light grip. Sometimes he'll let go while standing, and once he realizes he's standing by himself, he gets this cartoonish "uh-oh!" look on his face and falls to the ground.
    • Waves and says something when people leave. Sometimes it's "baba" (which of course we think means "bye bye"), sometimes it's "dada" and sometimes it's just "aaaaah." But, he seems to get that he's supposed to wave and make some sort of noise when people walk out the door. Sometimes he says it after they've left (for instance, when Ann came to visit the other day, Jack kept waving and saying "babababa" as Ann walked down the hall!), but it's still cute.
    • On the verbal front, Jack continues to come out with new syllables. I feel him edging closer to actual talking.
    • Tosses his paci out of his crib at bedtime, then lays there, calling out, "Maaaaaama. Maaaaaaam. Mamamamama" lazily. If I don't go to him within a few minutes, he'll get more insistent: "Mama! Mama! Ma!" Then he grins like a bandit when I go in there to pick up the paci. It's hard, but I always just hand it back to him and walk out without lingering, so he doesn't get the idea that it's a fun game. It's not so cute when he does the version where he tosses his paci out and then cries holy murder. He did that a couple of times last weekend, when there was lots of activity due to Johnny's graduation festivities. Luckily, it seems to have been a few isolated incidents.
    • Chews on the rail of his crib. Jack apparently likes to pull up on his crib, stand there and gnaw at the rail like a mouse. The paint on the crib is lead-free and safe for this very activity. I am amused to see the little tooth marks on the top of the crib. It reminds me of June, who gnawed a lovely ring all around our wooden coffee table as a toddler.
    • Finally, Jack loves having his teeth brushed! One of the fellow moms on my pregnancy.org birth club forum asked how often people brushed their babies' teeth. I was like, "What?! I've just been going over Jack's teeth and gums with a washcloth." Little did I know that other moms were brushing their babies' teeth! At first I was confused -- how would babies spit out toothpaste? Would Jack actually tolerate a brush in his mouth? I learned from the forum that there is such a thing as baby toothpaste that the baby can swallow, that most babies love the flavor (usually banana or apple), and that it usually comes with a fingertip brush. So Johnny went out and bought baby toothpaste from CVS (actually, it was apple-banana flavor), and it came with a blue fingertip brush. We laughed because it reminded us exactly of brushing Atari's teeth -- we used a green fingertip brush and peanut butter-flavored toothpaste with him. Anyway, Jack adores it. When he sees the blue brush, he claps his hands and opens his mouth, and he laughs when the bristles go over his gums. I hope this love of brushing continues!

Now that I have bored you half to death, here are some pictures from Father's Day. We took Jack in the pool with his floaty seat. Johnny bought it for Jack at Target. It also comes with a shade that can go over the seat. It wasn't too sunny when we went in, though, so we left the shade part in the apartment.

    Goofy faces

He kept wanting to leap out of my arms and into the water

It was fun to be all wrapped up with Jack!

After the pool, Jack got bundled into PJs and went on to his next favorite activity: pushing a mixing bowl along the kitchen floor

  • I love baby updates!  I used to do these once a month for Mya during her first year - I'll probably do the same for Fraser.  And man, I wish Mya liked getting her teeth brushed.  Some days she's great and others it's a battle to get her to open her mouth.  And, I can just picture how cute Jack must be calling for you in his crib, bahaha.

I just noticed in the pictures how quickly his hair has grown back.  Does it seem thicker or different from his hair pre-shave?

  • He's almost a year old already!? OMG He gets cuter by the day. I love baby updates and tha first picture of him and Johnny in the pool with the goofy faces is hilarious. I love it!

  • Oh, I sure hope for your sake that Jack continues to like having his teeth brushed!!! We probably started brushing Hannah's teeth at around 5-6 months (with the fingertip brush) and if I recall, she liked it at first. Then, she started clamping down on our fingers with so much force that we decided to move on to a small toothbrush. Hannah still screams and cries when we try to brush her teeth and just recently I came up with the idea to put her stool in the bathroom so she could watch in the mirror and she seems to enjoy it more.

Hehe...the paci story reminded me of why we started putting 2 in Hannah's crib I can't believe he's down to 2 bottles! I'm ashamed to say that Hannah still gets 1 bottle It hasn't been long that she's been down to one, either. What does he drink in his sippy cup? Hannah won't drink milk out of a sippy cup. Sometimes I think she'll never give up her bedtime bottle!

Love the pictures!!! I really like the one with the goofy faces and you and Jack wrapped in the towel

  • @shelly1196 - Shelly, Jack takes formula/milk from his sippy cups. We also always keep one big one filled with water for him throughout the day, especially now that it's so hot out. Sometimes with meals, he'll want a break from the milk sippy and ask for the water sippy. I use the word "ask" loosely ... it really means he'll throw the unwanted sippy from his high chair with a lot of force. :) I personally do not think Jack will give up his breakfast bottle anytime soon ... like Hannah, he'll probably keep one bottle a day for a while. It's not that huge a deal to me, because all children eventually give up bottles, even if you don't push them, and in the meantime, the bottle keeps them somewhat babyish for a while! I love the early mornings, when Jack cuddles against me, drinking his bottle with his eyes closed. It is the only remaining babyish gesture from him, it seems! One bottle a day isn't going to harm his teeth, so I'm not too worried.

Now that you mention it, Jack sometimes bites my finger really hard during brushing ... uh-oh!

  • @TinkersWhimsy - Thank you! :) Yes, his hair has grown back fast, and you know, against my beliefs, it IS different pre-shave! Pre-shave, he had a lot of very fine hair. Now, his hair is thicker, more "bristly," kind of ... it's like little boy hair, not baby hair, and there seems to be even more of it. It also looks to be closer to Johnny's color, especially if you see it in person.

  • He's growing up too fast!
I used to have one of those tooth brushes for my cat, too :) Tuna flavored toothpaste, eeeew.

  • I loved the baby update!  He's so adorable!  We use one of those baby toothbrushes with Eli but he doesn't really like it (with or without the baby toothpaste.)  We've been using it for maybe three months without much change in his enthusiasm.

I'm so excited for Jack and his transition from the bottle.  Eli prefers a bottle all the time.  He does use a sippy for water but doesn't like the sippy for milk.  This weekend, I'm gonna try a different sippy cup that has a straw to see if we have better results.

Someone mentioned putting an extra paci in their child's crib and that's what we do.  Eli always has an 'extra' in his crib so if he loses one he has that spare...

  • I sit here, knows that if this were 3 years ago - I wouldn't have a damn clue what all this meant.  But thanks to Heather, and her Early Childhood Education, for the most part I am able to understand the timeline of growing up, and how well Jack is doing.  I know she would be so proud of him, as well as you for doing such a great job.

  • Awww! Beverly, Jack is SO stinkin cute! He is growing up so fast and he will be walking before you know it. His hair has also gotten lighter which looks nice and he is such a big boy now. Time sure does fly by fast. Hope you have a good weekend! :o )

  • Aww love the update on Jack, it feels like I'm "acutally" there! LOL  Love the pictures especially the good face one. have a good weekend.

Tell your sis I said Happy early birthday, considering she shares the same day as adrian.  i can't believe my little boy is growing up and will be one!  its amazing how time flies.

  • Aww, what a cute update! Love it!

  • so cute!!! more pics!

  • I have some pics of me brushing ryan's teeth with one of those fingertip toothbrushes, hehe.

ryc:  lol, I didnt put up all the other pics where he had his "thumbs down"!

  • when's he gonna stop getting cuter???

  • Hahaha!  I see Jack and I want to cry for the few months that I missed.  It is like you and Jack and Johnny are my next door neighbors or something.  You're just so familiar and comforting to me!  I love Jack....send him to me!  I promise to give him back (sooner or later!  :D )
Now, off to do that thingy you tagged me for!  :P

  • How many posts did I miss this time? Sorry, Bev, I've been having too much fun packing and cleaning out my offices! I love all the swimming pool pictures; how do you guys get him to make all those goofy faces??? That's just amazing that you were able to catch so many pictures of Johnny and Jack making faces together. Must be some father-son telepathy.

It's funny, when I read about Jack brushing, my immediate reaction is to also think about brushing Miso's teeth. Frankly, I've been a terrible mom in that domain. It's always a struggle with her because she tries so hard to lick it off before I can start properly brushing her. I'm glad to hear that Jack's such a good brusher. I think if you try to make it all fun and game, kids can really enjoy brushing. Back when I was at home, we sometimes did group brushing (we just um.. brush our teeth at the same time, and yes, it helps when you have double sinks). I used to think it's silly, but I realized later that it really prolongs the brushing  time (and not brushing long enough is apparently the biggest problem most people have).

  • He is such a cutie!! That first pic of him with the scrunchy face is so great. The first year is so fun. They take such giant leaps and go from being a little tiny thing that can do nothing but eat and sleep - to crawling, walking, swimming, babbling, talking - so amazing.
