  • Gorgeous weekend

I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful weekend. The weather in LA is nearly always nice, but the last couple of weeks, it's been rainy and/or freezing (which, for LA, is in the high 40s). On Friday, though, the sun came out and stayed for the whole weekend! It was in the 70s on Friday and in the 80s on Saturday and Sunday. So perfect after a couple of cold weeks! The air even smelled like summer (but without humidity), and everyone put on T-shirts again. As much as I miss New York and Chicago, I was very happy to be an Angeleno as I drove around on my various errands, drinking in the humidity-free warmth. Jack seemed to be extra-jolly because of the great weather, too!

On Friday, after my work was done, Jack and I spent some quality time together reading an adorably illustrated but very trippy book about the Octonauts, some cute sea creatures who live in an octopus-shaped submarine. The whole time, I felt as though being high may have enhanced the reading experience. We also played with his froggie finger puppet.

It was a very hands-on experience for Jack

After playtime, we put Jack in his skull-n-crossbone PJs and dumped him in the laundry basket. Haha!

After Jack went down for the night, Johnny and I watched the movie Waitress. I really liked it!

Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous day. After spending the early morning with Jack and Johnny, I met up with Tomomi, a friend from my mother's group, for some baby-free conversation at the Coffee Bean. We sat outside and chatted about our babies (her son is two weeks older than Jack), our husbands, video games, preschools, strollers, work, and all sorts of other things. We might make it a weekly thing; it was a really fun hour! Afterward, I picked up groceries for the week at Trader Joe's, which is next door to the Coffee Bean. Johnny and I have been planning our weekly menus in advance, and it's worked out really well. I love the produce and meat at Trader Joe's. I actually think I love everything at Trader Joe's. It's so fresh, and I feel like I'm being all eco-friendly when I shop there.

After grocery shopping, I spent the rest of the day with my wonderful boys (Johnny, Jack and Atari, of course). Jack was very happy all day (extra-happy!).

Jack's figured out how to drink from a sippy cup by bringing his mouth down to it ... but he knows how to hold a bottle and tilt it, so I'm hoping he'll figure out the cup soon!

After lunch, we all headed to the park (along with all the other families) to soak up the sunshine.

Saturday night, after Jack fell asleep, we bundled him into the car seat and went out to a self-serve Brazilian barbecue place for dinner. Jack slept the entire time as we ate; we felt very lucky and indulgent as we had a sneaky date! I had some veggies, spicy chicken and garlic beef, with one of those yummy cheesy rolls (yes, I was able to restrict myself to just one!). After dinner, I was really tired, so I fell asleep almost as soon as we got home.

Sunday, I met up with my friend Courtney and Karthika for tea at the Huntington Library. It was another beautiful day, and as much as I missed Jack and Johnny, it felt really good to meet up with girlfriends and catch up without any husbands, boyfriends or babies!

Here we are on the path between the Japanese and Chinese gardens (Karthika, Courtney and me from left to right)

I also took some pictures of the koi pond and other nice scenery from the Huntington.

After our leisurely tea and stroll, we parted ways. Before leaving Pasadena, I stopped by the Whole Foods to get Jack some teething biscuits and baby oatmeal. Wow, that Whole Foods is like an amusement park. I seriously want to devote an entire day to wandering around in there. It's two stories tall, and while you go up one side of the escalator (or down), your shopping cart rides on its own escalator next to you. I love those dual escalators. They have a cosmetics counter full of organic makeup, a huge bath & body section, a big cafe and of course all the groceries. They also have kitchenware and china, all very eco-friendly, expensive and attractively packaged. I gawked for a long time before getting to the baby aisle. I discovered that they have this great baby oatmeal that's already in a cylindrical container, so I didn't have to transfer the oatmeal to an airtight container. This oatmeal has probiotics in it, too, to promote a healthy GI tract. And it's organic, of course. I don't buy much at Whole Foods (it's too expensive!), but for Jack, I have been splurging. He doesn't eat much compared to an adult, so I figure I might as well pamper him while his GI tract is still developing. I fed it to him this morning and have to say that it smelled really good even in its dried form, and especially after I mixed it with breast milk and homemade apple/pear/cinnamon puree. He ate it in like two seconds. When Jack's done with the teething biscuits (which are whole wheat and taste just a little lemony, but not sweet), I think I'll go back and buy the little puffs (like Cheerios except organic and shaped like little bears) for him. This weekend I noticed that he's grabbing things with his thumb and index finger (the pincer grasp!) and feeding himself Cheerios. He's been trying for a long time but finally he's succeeded. He's still not great at releasing from the pincer grasp, but he can definitely grasp. I'm proud!

Wow, I just spent a paragraph talking about Whole Foods, baby oatmeal and my son's pincer grasp as though they were the most fascinating topics in the world. Time for me to get a life!

  • Haha... you have a life -- just a different one now that Jack's here! :) YAY for him figuring out how to pick up cheerios. Oh, and for the record, I LOVE Whole Foods. If we had more money, I would love to shop there for all of us! But alas, we do not have enough money to shop there on a weekly basis.

And yay for Jack's accomplishments. He looks so cute in the laundry basket!

Ok, that's it! Talk to you soon! Thanks for the comment and suggestions!

  • Ugh...you're in a jean skirt and a t-shirt It's in the low 20s here today and when the wind blows it is HORRIBLE!!! It was actually 70 degrees last Wednesday and it was sooooo nice...sigh!

When Jack is holding his bottle and drinking it is he usually in his highchair? I just wonder if he's not tilting back with his sippy cup because his head is supported by the highchair. It took Hannah a very long time to figure out how to tilt her head back when she was sitting upright with something behind her head (i.e. highchair or carseat). That's great that he's accomplished the pincer grasp and it seems like he's also doing very well with his eating! Does he have any teeth yet? I don't remember if you've mentioned that before...I don't think so?

How wonderful that you had time to yourself and with girlfriends over the weekend...and you snuck in a date - that's AWESOME! How wonderful that he slept for you guys. Once Hannah reached the age where we were getting her highchairs in restaurants, it became interesting

As always, great pictures and Jack is adorable

  • aww he is getting so big and still as cute as ever! He likes the swings too and I love the laundry basket picture. Its exciting when they start picking up snacks on their own...just wait til he's using silverware :) I have never been into whole foods but it would be cool to see the one you went to. The ones here I have seen from the outside don't look anything like that (they are one story) I think that dual escalator thing is awesome. You'll have to take a picture of that for me lol :) By the way...you look amazing! I can't believe how great you look in that picture of you with your friends.

  • I laughed so many times in this entry, there is too much to comment on! I'm jealous of your sunshine. I think maybe I'll check out those Octonauts, they sound like fun.

  • RYC: LOL! Hannah used to do that...she'd stick something in her mouth and not let go and pull it back out. Then she would look at it like, "hey, didn't I just put that in my mouth?"

Jack is 7 months so I thought maybe you were going to skip the whole head-shaving thing He'll still be absolutely adorable

  • one of the things i miss most about living in la (west la) is trader joe's & whole foods! so go on - i can read paragraph after paragraph about those places. :) ps. jack is absolutely precious in his skulls 'n bones pajamas!

  • great wknd! =)

  • I LOVE reading your mommy posts... you talk about baby's GI tracts... you are too cute!

I love Jack's hair... have you given him a haircut yet? If you already posted about it, sorry either I missed it or forgot! (I have a mommy's brain nowadays)

I recently started Tyson on bananas and avocados.... he loves both. If you haven't already, you should start Jack on avocados... it's supposedly really healthy for babies. I think Tyson can eat the whole thing if I let him... of course I don't. I give him 1/4 and make guacamole with the rest!

Do you know it's below zero in NYC? Meanwhile I see Jack wearing cute short sleeve outfits.... so jealous of the LA weather!!!

  • I'm glad you had a great weekend and so proud of Jack that he is able to do alot.  ttyl.  Hurray for great weather over in LA

  • I love how he always looks so happy!
Idea from a seasoned mom (did I just call myself that?!):  Thade was OK with sippies but Steph didn't use them and went straight to those cups with the straws.  Thade took forever to get the hang of the straw cups....I actually thought of throwing them out a few times.  Jack might be able to get the hang of the straw cups since he doesn't tilt his sippy up.  :)   (I can't believe that I called myself a seasoned mom!  :P )
Send some 80's weather my way!  We almost hit 70 here and there and that feels OK to me.  But my body is most comfortable in the low to mid 80's.  :)

  • i love stopping by your site and seeing your pics..your baby jack is adorable..have a blessed weekend...love, g

  • the weather has been gorgeous here, also.  makes me want to sit outside all day with my dogs and watch them run around with a nice cup of iced tea.  i love the newest and latest pictures of jack! its just so amazing to see him grow and be able to start doing things such as holding his own sippy cup and bottle.  he's so happy and i love the picture where he's in the laundry basket.  that's so something i would do!!  your day at huntington library look like fun and i'm glad you got to spend time with your girlfriends.  i always look forward to my monthly girls night out - it's a nice break and a chance to just relax and not worry about anything. i have actually never been into a whole foods although i've always wanted to stop by...there's also a sprouts here, too that i'd like to visit.  i know about the escalator you're talking about!! they had one in the target in san diego when i was visiting polly.  i was truly amazed and actually took a picture of it to send home to john!

  • Hi Beverly! Happy Valentine's Day! Do you, Jack and Johnny have any plans? Jack got cuter. :o ) I loved all the pictures you posted and he seems like such a happy baby. I hear ya on Whole Foods. The last time I was there I only bought a few things b/c it was too expensive. I love shopping at Trader Joe's though. They have such neat foods/products for a reasonable price. I might have to stop by there soon.

ryc: I might try that banana cheesecake you mentioned! That sounds so yummy. I usually try different ones each time I go like the snickers, Heathbar crunch, and carrot cake. Pumpkin was one of my favorites. I don't go there often though b/c its kinda pricey.
