  • Ulcer time

Like any other household, Johnny and I have our fair share of stress. There's the daily struggle to perform reasonably well at school and work; keep our infant happy, stimulated and fed; try to exercise and nourish ourselves; keep food and water in the dog's bowls; pay the bills; and maintain some measure of basic grooming and style for ourselves. Throw overtime work, a baby with sniffles (undoubtedly from our recent cross-country flight) and Johnny's midterms into the mix, and it's enough to give anyone an ulcer.

That's right. Last week, someone in our family got an ulcer. Was it me? No, there's no time. Was it Johnny? No, he was preoccupied by the same sniffles that Jack had. Was it Jack? No, he's blissfully unaware of stress and its debilitating consequences. That's right, folks .... Atari got an ulcer! The member of the family who sleeps 20 hours a day, has guaranteed meals (meals, I might add, of organic kibble made with whitefish and sweet potato) and three solid walks a day, with no job and no growing up to do, got an ulcer!

At the time, I was really worried. On Thursday night, Atari vomited. This isn't typical, but also not that rare. I wasn't that concerned -- it was a khaki color, with some grass in it. We figured that he'd just eaten too much grass for his own good. He treats the park like a salad bar each day. Friday, the same thing happened. (By the way, of course things like this always happen at 2 a.m.) We thought, "OK, no more nibbling on grass." On Saturday, he did it again ... this time, despite no grass that day, there was grass and blood in the vomit. (Sorry for you weak-stomached readers ... you must be without dogs and/or babies. ) I was almost in tears as Johnny cleaned up. I thought Atari's stomach was pierced and that he was going to die. I felt very guilty for the slight neglect he's been subjected to since Jack's arrival. I immediately called the vet (they're open 24 hours a day). The operator said that if it's been three days, it wasn't a life-or-death situation, and he'd rather Atari see the doctor in the morning, because the Saturday night doctor was only there overnight on Saturdays and wouldn't be able to do follow-up appointments during the week.

So at 9 a.m. Sunday, Johnny took Atari to the vet while Jack and I sat at home nervously. Well, I was nervous. Jack worked on trying to crawl. (He's now up on his knees, but hasn't figured out that he should simultaneously be up on his hands.) About 45 minutes later, Johnny reported that Atari had had a blood test, an examination, an X-ray, antibiotic shots and been given some meds to bring home. Apparently he got an ulcer from eating something he shouldn't have (but not grass, as the vet said that was a symptom and not a cause), or from an infection, which caused the bleeding. The blood test showed nothing wrong with him (which is good). We just had to give him the antibiotics -- four in total. Two of them twice a day, two of them three times a day. He's been good about taking his meds, and has been energetic and vomit-free since the weekend. What a relief! However, this all set us back $528! Believe it or not, that's not a bad price for Los Angeles, given all the services, but I was definitely not planning to spend more than $500 on Sunday. Think of all the shoes, clothes or baby things I could have gotten for $528. Oh, Atari. I'm just glad he's OK.

In more pleasant news, Amy is coming to SoCal for a postdoc interview in a couple of weeks! After many years of Xanga comments, emails and phone conversations (and actually, before Xanga, posts on a Shiba Inu forum), we finally get to meet ... and not only that, but she'll be staying with us while she's here. I'm really excited! She and her husband also have a Shiba, so I'm sure Atari will go wild -- he somehow knows when someone has another Shiba. Too bad Han is not coming with her (I think he and Johnny would really get along), but I'm sure we'll meet him at some point in the future.

Finally, if you live in a state that's holding a primary today ... go vote!

  • poor atari! i'm glad to hear he is doing better now.  those darn vet appointments really can cost an arm and a leg! i remember taking kyoko in for some testing for her hip and valley fever tests and walking out $500 poorer later.  Is poorer a word? I doubt it.  anyway, i cant believe dogs can get ulcers!  poor doggie.  again, i'm just glad he's doing well and i'm glad it wasn't you or johnny or even jack that had the ulcer!

how exciting that amy is coming to visit you! i am jealous you get to meet her, but i guess all her jealousy of you and i meeting on several occassions is finally coming through! have lots of fun and take lots of pictures!!!  now if only the 3 of us can get together and our 3 husbands can sit and play video games all night!

  • Beverly, I'm so glad to hear that Atari is ok. That would've scared me too! Vet appts can be very expensive. Sophie's last visit was $150 for some shots and full year worth of heart guard pills..geez louise. But it was well worth it. I'm glad we're both dog lovers! :o )

  • Tell him that was an expensive plan just to get a little attention

The vet is never a cheap thing, but it seems the unexpected trips there are the worst. It feels like they charge so much but when I look at what MY medical bills cost (like labs and xrays or even meds!) it's actually not that expensive at all.

    Here's for continued recovery...

  • Sully says for Atari to keep on feeling better! He wants to be able to play when we come to see you guys in a couple of weeks!!!!

AHEM, that's right, Feb. 19-28th, I'll be in LA. I'll even have a rental car the whole time, woohoo!

I really want to be able to plan time to hang out, take pictures, etc...so call or email me so we can get that in my trip-planner, alright? Yay!

  • It's scary when your pets get sick!!

I am glad he is ok! Tell Atari to take it easy and relieve some of that life stress he's got built up in there. ha.

  • Poor Atari!! I hope he feels better soon. Oh and I do think it's funny that the family member that sleeps the most is the one who gets sick fastest! Yikes!

I wish I could have voted in the primary last week, but my voter's registration card has the wrong address and they wouldn't let me vote. Oh well. I'll vote for the President. :)

  • Hey there, I just want to let you know that it probably isnt anything you have done to cause Atari's ulcer. Uclers arent caused by stress, they are caused by bacteria. Generally stress increased the acids in your stomach which eat away at the lining and allow an entry in for diseases. But that entry point can exist without extra stomach acids.
In all likelihood he probably ate a piece of grass at the park that had a particularly strong bacteria on it and he couldnt end up fighting it off.
You and Johnny are good parents to both Jack and Atari so I wouldnt stress on that too much. :)

  • Awww...poor Atari I'm so glad that he's feeling better! We've taken Kita to the emergency vet twice and it's $90 just to walk in the door and we usually don't leave without spending around $500 - I think the one time it was like $800 because she had to stay over.

I didn't vote But Shaun did and he took Hannah with him because she had a pretty cranky day and I was tired and cranky and needed a break!

  • Poor Atari :(   Here's to a full recovery!  Luckily, we haven't had high vet bills.  I think the most expensive one was this past summer we got Copper & Todd's teeth scaled and polished and along with 3 months of preventative meds, it was $250.  Not too bad.

I did vote today and I will admit right here on your blog that I am 31 years old and I had never voted until yesterday!  So why don't you just give me a pat on the back :)

  • Glad to hear Atari is better and nothing serious happen.  I don't own any pets but I feel for you all. Thank god he recovered well.

  • Oh no! Sorry to hear that..... Yar, I panic too when I see Yoshi throwing up. He was doing that for a while there, and we thought it was just a Saturday thing...but it turned out his Steroid drops (which we are phasing out - bad for his liver) are making him have acid reflux and he might have an ulcer too....

Poor Atari.......Give him lots for me and I am so glad that he is going to be fine with meds.......I know I spent a fortune as well for Yoshi!

  • I chuckled and got teary reading your description of Atari's stress-free yet ulcer ridden life. I was partly worried about him especially with what Miso went through last year. I hear your pain about the vet bills. I am really worried about finding a pet sitter once we move to California as I hear pet boarding is extremely expensive. Reading your post, I was also envious of all of our pets. Don't they have such a laid back and happy life? I don't know how many times in the past month when I looked at Toastie or Miso sleeping contently and I said, that's what I want to be in 5 years, happy as my own dog.
