Successful travels
We had a great first big trip with Jack! It was a great time. We went to Covington, Louisiana (across the lake from New Orleans) to celebrate my mother-in-law's 60th birthday. It was also a family reunion of sorts, since Johnny's maternal grandparents live there, along with his Aunt Candie, the mayor of Covington. Johnny's other aunt lives in Baton Rouge, along with an aunt and cousin on his dad's side, so it was a natural place to hold the event.
Bright and early Friday morning, we set out with all of our stuff and Jack's things in tow: the Pack N Play, the Bumbo and our rolling bag, not to mention his car seat and stroller. My diaper bag was stuffed to the brim with bottles, frozen baby food, spoons, bibs, diapers, toys ... you name it, that diaper bag had it! Making it through security was a hassle as always -- they even made me take off Jack's little booties! Oh, darn, I guess that razor blade I hid in his little shoe couldn't make it through after all!
But after that, we were home free. I gave Jack a pacifier during takeoff to prevent his ears from popping, and since it was his naptime anyway, he fell asleep for about 45 minutes. Throughout the rest of the 3.5-hour flight, he played, sat on our laps and smiled at other people. I think at first, other passengers were frightened to sit near a baby, but by the end of the flight, they were marveling at how well-behaved Jack was. He did squeal a bunch out of excitement, but it was cute. A flight attendant moved us up to the roomier Economy Plus section mid-flight, which was really nice!
We're ready for takeoff!
Jack was fascinated by the buttons on the arm rest
Jack catches up on all the gossip of the pond-dwellers. Last I heard, the spotted salamander was sliding along the mossy green bank. That salamander!
We got to the New Orleans airport earlier than planned, but had to wait a long time for our rental car, then drove in the blinding rain to Covington. By the time we got to Aunt Candie's, it was time for dinner, hellos and then bed! We were all pretty tired. The highlight of the evening was Jack (and us) meeting Maddy, Chris and Victoria's precious 10-week-old daughter. She's so little! Well, actually, she's in the 90th percentile for both height and weight, but compared to Jack, she felt so light. It made me want another baby! (Ha!)
The next day was the day of the party. We had to buy some decorations and other party supplies, but first we stopped by Johnny's grandparents' place so they could meet their other great-grandchild (Chris, Victoria and Maddy were already staying with the grandparents). They fawned over Jack, then the two cousins had some playtime.
Jack was fascinated by Maddy's bouncy seat. Perhaps he remembered his own!
Look, they're holding hands!
So this is what it feels like to have twins!
After the visit, we headed out with Catie (Aunt Candie's daughter) for some party-supply and flower shopping. Then it was time to get dressed for the party. People soon started arriving. They hired a photographer for the event, but of course Johnny and I took pics!

Chef Chris making appetizers -- these were yummy baguette rounds topped with roast beef, a squirt of horseradish and a sliver of roasted bell pepper
Another one of Chris' creations -- an antipasti platter. Isn't it pretty?

Can you believe my mother-in-law is 60?!
I thought this picture of Johnny's mom, her two sisters and her mom was really cute!
Jack spends quality time with his great-grandpa
Ana, the daughter of one of Johnny and Chris' cousins, loved the babies. Maddy seems more interested in her than Jack does in this pic, though!

Aunt Candie wrote a hilarious mayor's proclamation in honor of Sandra O'Neal Birthday Celebration Day
I love this pic of me and Jack!
The in-laws after Johnny's mom opened gifts
After the gifts and before the yummy Italian dinner was served, I got Jack ready for bed. Note his "I Love Chicks" PJs!
Saying goodnight to Aunt Victoria
The cake was a delicious tiramisu. Later that night, Catie and I split the giant slab of white chocolate resting on top of the cake. Delicious but baaaaad idea!
After Jack went to bed, Ana (4 years old) and Nico (six years old) somehow found me fascinating, especially Ana. They wanted to play all sorts of games with me. Unfortunately they knew only the name of their "games," such as "Fast Pass Fast Tag," but assumed I knew the rules. I had to think fast! At one point, they pulled out a Yahtzee box and wanted to play. I do not know Yahtzee at all, but the kids found the instruction pamphlet and instructed me to teach them. It looked really complicated, so I quickly started thinking of alternate rules. Nico and Ana somehow got it in their heads that there needed to be a game board, and it must be red because the box is red. There was no board in the box. So I "read" the instructions to be: Play on the provided board or on any other red surface. Nico looks down and says, "Hey, this carpet is red! We can play on the carpet!" Hallelujah.
Yahtzee in action. Ana has lost interest.
At first, I said that the object of the game was to scatter dice on the ground and pick them all up as quickly as possible. Nico sat up and said, "No. I want to play the real way." Busted! The game became adding up all the numbers showing on the dice as quickly as possible. Sad, but true: Six-year-old Nico was faster at adding up all the numbers than I was!
The next morning, Johnny's parents, grandparents, Chris, Victoria and Maddy came over to Aunt Candie's for a delicious breakfast casserole. We said our goodbyes then.

Maddy does tummy time -- she took it pretty well!
The two young families with our babies -- not the most flattering angle for the adults, but cute nonetheless
Catie and I
On our way back to the airport, we stopped at Cafe du Monde with Catie for some delectable beignets, which are basically square donuts covered in powdered sugar. They are so delicious. I've been craving them since my first trip to New Orleans with Johnny and some friends three years ago. They made me feel so sick afterward, since I've been eating really healthy lately, but they were worth the stomach pain and the calories. We washed them down with some chocolate milk. Mmm!
Sugary goodness!
Wow, this was long. Thanks for reading, everyone!
p.s. Just for kicks, I think this last trip to the New Orleans area was much different from our 2005 trip there. Check out what we did during that trip! (This should look familiar to Zach! I think this was the night of the test tube shots!) Jack will be very embarrassed by this picture one day.

Looks like some great time with family members
Glad Jack handled the plane well.. Im always nervous about that!
Oh man, that last picture... That was also a fun trip, but a very different one!
You've got to hand it to my mom: for someone who has never had plastic surgery, never wears makeup, and recently let her hair grow out to its natural color, she is looking good at 60!
Jack was a great little traveler, but that's no surprise. And it was great to see sweet little Madeleine!
Awwwww! Great pics! What a beautiful family! Tell Johnny he's in trouble though...he didn't coordinate with everyone else in the young families shot!!!
Looks like so much fun! Glad Jack (and other passengers) handled the flight so well. Gracie first flight was when she was 1 year. That is a long story, but I will have to share it with you sometime. The party looked fabulous and Johnny's mother looks great! I can't wait to hear how Maddy & Jack play as they get older. Where does Johnny's immediate family live? Thanks for sharing your wonderful weekend.
So nice you had such a wonderful time. And totally awesome the Jack was such an awesome kiddo on the plane. I've been a little hesistant to take Mya on a plane for fear that she'd screech the whole time.
fun times! =) the antipasti platter looks awesooooome
i love how you guys color coordinate your clothes for the picture... even the baby is wearing blue...hehehe
Jack has a lot of hair for his age...
i give props to Jack for being a good boy on the airplane. usually kids just don't sit still and will be crying and screaming...
Wow, what fun!!! Your in-laws look so cute and no...she definitely does NOT look 60! It was hilarious to see Jack next to a new(er) baby - he's grown so much!!! He is looking more and more like a little kid - I thought that wasn't supposed to happen yet!?
I'm sure it's partially the hair - I think babies look older when they have a full head. In any case, it's wonderful your trip went well - looks like a fun family! (Nice gaming, too...it's a good thing you're creative...)
Wow Beverly: Seems like a fun trip and glad you all enjoyed yourself. I am more fasinated that Jack enjoyed his trip on the plane. Question, since you can consider yourself a pro on this subject. I will be traveling in about two weeks going to GUYANA with adrian, does the pacifier thing actually work during takeoff and landing. I am so nervous because it will be his first flight trip as well. Please send me an e-mail with any advise you can give.
I am so much in awe in how well jack sits up by himself now, guess the bumbo really does work and help them. The two cousins looks so adorable together and your mother look GORGEOUS. Indeed for a woman who turned 60!. Way to go Johnny's mom.
I will be looking forward to your e-mail, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
have a great day.
MY GOODNESS, the pictures! Johnny's mom does NOT look like she just turned 60! Geez, his Grandma looks like SHE could pass for 60!
Gorgeous children all around you! I am usually the person that keeps the kids occupied at family gatherings. LOL!
Sounds like a LOT of fun!! I can't believe you took all those things with you. I just love Jack's expressions!! He's a heartbreaker! Your MIL looks amazing for her age! Kids are so smart these days. I'll be intimidated to return to school.
Beverly, everytime I see your pics it brightens my day. Jack always look so happy and I think it really has to do with how wonderful your pregnancy period was with the support of your family, johnny and just your own positive attitude. Johnny's mom looks REALLY good! wow, good genes on his side of the family too, no wonder Jack is so darn cute! I love his Chicks shirt! he is gonna be a little heartbreaker hahaha. And the last pic, you guys look like FUN and hey, you still look fab! you look so slim and svelt in your dress! I love this whole entry, and I just realized I've used a lot of exclamation points hahaha!
Aww!! I love your posts! It always make me smile!
OMG... the funniest thing happened today! We were at Target and there's this other mom (or grandma, maybe??) that comes in with this little boy and I SWEAR, he looked identical to Jack!
So it's funny... Jack has a "twin" in Florida!
OMG you were so close to us!!! Covington is only a few (3-ish?) hours away!!! I bet somewhere down the line your family knows my family, my mother is from Louisiana!
Loved the pictures and Baby Jack is just precious!
P.S. - My evil SIL lives in Baton Rouge, gag!
RYC- Yeah, it all depends where you live. I was watching HGTV, and they were looking at houses that cost over 300 thousand, and they were only 3 bedrooms. If you bought a house that was 300 thou here, you'd be in a freakishly NICE BIG house, with prob 5-6 bedrooms. We bought our house for 30,000, but it was a piece of crap. We gutted it and started all over. lol. It's now worth over 100k. Thank goodness, all our hard work will be paid off! =D
I love the pictures!! It looks like you had a great time and I'm so happy to hear that Jack was so well-behaved on the plane ride! The food that Chris made looks delicious and I'm very jealous you went to Cafe du Monde as I have always wanted to eat a beignet there! I remember one time my friend brought back a box of beignet that you can make from scratch - it was soooo long ago, but it was basically a box of flour and its other special ingredients and you add stuff and fry it up yourself...again, it was when i was young and that was my only taste of a Cafe du Monde beignet. I have to agree, you are looking really good and nice to see you in your pre-pregnancy dresses again and looking real pretty! Jack is adorable, as always!!! I want to squeeze his cheeks!
RYC: she is now about 6 weeks. She is feeling pretty good...of course just tired.
I do remember posting about their break-up. I guess that shows how much I keep up with my Xanga
They broke up for about 2 weeks and of course were miserable and got back together! Since they got back together, they seem to get along much better and I just hope they make it. I do love her and I just hope that she turns out to be a good mommy. I know whatever she lacks as a mom, Steven will make up for in a dad. He is so sensitive and loving...he will be a great dad.
I love Yahtzee! I have the "board" game and an electronic hand-held version. So fun! The pictures are all so wonderful and it looks like everyone had a great time together. Jack is so lucky to have parents that document everything so well with pictures...he's going to have so many memories to look back on when he's an adult. We both got so lucky with our babies...when we took Hannah to Arizona when she was 5 1/2 months she was wonderful on the plane ride and slept most of them time on Shaun or me. Those cheeks, that hair, that wonderful smile...Jack is soooo cute!
Love the pictures! Looks like the trip was a lot of fun and the party seems like a big success! Looking at the pics of the baby cousins together, I think Jack will make a great big brother someday! He is too cute- I especially like the one of him "reading" on the plane! Glad you'll had such a nice family getaway!
well done!! We'll be taking our first flight around Easter. Should be interesting. And I'm sure a lot of my weight loss was stress induced due to Tierney's unexpected visit to the NICU.
so cute! i love your son, he totally looks like a japanese anime character!!! i want to see him in print ads in my magazines! or on tv!!! so cute! and you look GREAT by the way!!!
All you agree is true, I ruminate accordingly
