  • First foray into making baby food

Last night, after making dinner (veal marsala), I turned my kitchen into a baby food factory.

I've long been excited to make food for Jack, and now that he's been on oatmeal for a week, I've gotten the OK to begin introducing one vegetable at a time. After much thought, I decided to start him on green beans -- it's not as sweet as the other first vegetable contenders I was considering (butternut squash, sweet potatoes), which some experts say will help ensure that Jack won't reject green vegetables later on. Personally, I am doubtful about this theory, but since I like green beans, I decided to give it a whirl.

During my lunch break yesterday, I went to buy fresh green beans. All day long I kept thinking about this project. A long time ago, I had bought ice cube trays with lids to hold my necklaces in (each necklace went into a separate cube). I had some extra trays, which would be perfect for freezing baby food. I had already laid out Ziploc freezer bags and Sharpies with which to label the contents of the bag. My thought was that once I'd emptied the ice cube trays of green bean puree, I could move on to do some other veggies and freeze those. Anyway, the point is, my mind was totally on baby food. So imagine my excitement when I got home and discovered that June had sent me these Baby Cubes as a surprise!

Now, I know some of you will scoff, but I'm a sucker for organizational gadgets. Yes, I do plan to use the ice-cube-into-baggies method, but these cubes come in various sizes (June got me the two-ounce size), the snap-on lids are attached, you can write on the white tray in dry-erase pen (so you know what the food is), and best of all, you can store, freeze, defrost, microwave and serve the food to your baby in one container! That may not sound like much, but it does save a few precious seconds! I don't have to take the lump of frozen food out of the baggie and put it into a separate container to defrost in the fridge. I can just take my Baby Cube and stick it in the fridge, or in my diaper bag! I am so excited. I called June to thank her, and she told me a baby food recipe book was on its way!!! I am so glad that my sister is as big a dork as I am.

OK, so on to baby food making. I eagerly steamed my green beans to perfection, then I whipped out the Magic Bullet (the blender/processor ... I'm aware there is a vibrator called the Magic Bullet out there!) and pureed the green beans. Let me tell you, I am a fan of the Magic Bullet. I know that practically everyone else has one already, and that I'm a very late adopter of it, but boy, did it puree quickly -- even better than my Cuisinart. And, it takes up so little room. The puree was a very attractive bright green, and it was pretty tasty! At least, it tasted like green beans. Let's hope Jack is a fan! I'll be giving it to him this Saturday. (It's silly, but I want to be the one to give him a new food, so I'll have to wait until the weekend.)

I took a picture of my new Baby Cubes filled with green bean puree that I'll have to post later. The tray is so cute, sitting next to my container that stores bags of frozen breast milk in a very flat, compact way. So now I have a whole shelf in my fridge for Jack's food/milk needs. It continues to amaze me how the gear and supplies for one little person can take up so much room! Anyway, this is lots of fun. I can't wait to roast butternut squash and sweet potatoes, make the purees out of that. I'm going to take advantage of the novelty while it lasts, because I'm sure that in no time, I will be breaking out the jarred foods!

  • You are the second person I've heard of making their own baby food. I guess I shouldn't be surprised seeing as how that's basically how my grandmother and mother did it, with a few jars of baby food interspersed, but for some reason it always surprises me!

I want one of those magic bullet things. I'm a sucker for infomercials, but if you totally love yours, I'm gonna have to get one! LOL

  • Beverly you are my hero...yay for homemade baby food, so fresh and healthy!  I think Jack is so lucky to have such a wonderful mom!  And hey, I think any precious seconds you save by cleaning up and transferring food is much needed when you have your little one taking up so much time:)  So the baby cubes are a great idea.  When I become a mom someday I'll have to lean on you for ideas because you'll be an expert by then!

Thank you for all the support and snack ideas.  I discovered Gnu bars...which is chewy and yummy and has only 130-150 calories and 12g of fiber!  I am a fan of fiber...it keeps you routine...hahaha.  So those are a good afternoon snack.  I love apple and peanut butter (the natural crunchy kind) but peanut butter has quite a bit of calories so I have to watch it.

Have a wonderful day and its so fun to see all the stuff you are doing with Jack!

  • I've seen those cubes (or ones like them). That's awesome that your sister got them for you and that she's sending you a recipe book! I give you so much credit...the only fresh thing I ever made for Hannah was mushed up banana (and breastmilk). Other than that, it's always been jarred food - although for awhile I only bought her organic.

Can't wait to see pictures of your culinary baby food creations!

  • What a great invention! I haven't seen those before either. I'm like you; I love, love, love organizational gadgets!! Oh and I always watch the infomercials on the Magic Bullet, but was kinda skeptical. Since you like it, I might have to invest in one since they really work! Cooking/preparing food sounds like so much and fun and I'm sure the possibilities are endless. After the veggies, maybe you can start introducing Jack to fruit? I can't wait to see pictures of what you come up with. :o )

  • RYC: LOL!!! Ahhhhh, you make me laugh I used Gerber Organics and some Earth's Best. I found that Earth's Best is a bit more expensive and for whatever reason Hannah had some tummy issues with some of them. I really could have used some of your homemade wipes at those times Oh, how far will we take this

  • You're a hero for doing that. Some day Jack will know he was always loved...

  • Those cubes are great! A lot of mom's could use those, and it was probably a mom that 'invented' them

I love organizational gadgets as well. I've always wanted to go to The Container Store but Im afraid of what I'd walk away with

I've wanted a magic bullet for a long time, too... now I know I need one!!

  • Your post totally cracked me up. I'm sorry, please don't be offended but if there was Mommy School, you would be the nerd in class! I've never seen anyone so obsessed with making baby food. I'm trying Tyson on rice cereal today, but having the nanny do it. Now you're making me feel bad that I'm not there for his "firsts".

Re: Magic Bullet... is that really good? Just today I was thinking about which blender to pick up to make baby food for Tyson. Of course it's not me making it, I'm going to get my nanny to do this stuff for me. I also gave up freezing foods, as you know, my boys only like fresh. I have an old cuisinart at home which I use to grind up garlic, ginger, onions and things like that but I would never use it for baby food. I need to pick up a new one.

Btw, just updated my blogspot! I really hope I can keep it up this time around.

  • i love those containers. i will have to get some when i have a baby... which will be about 2-3 years away. i want to make my own babyfood and i have also discovered cloth diapers. one of the little girls i babysit uses them and they are really cool and dont leak at all. its really neat the things they come up with now to make it easier to become green :)

  • Ohh... I meant to send you this link - this is the site I used to make Tristan baby food back in the day when I was a more patient mom

    http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/

  • those trys are so easy to use and it's quick and easy...

  • i never had the magic bullet. i used the blender to make the baby food.......but i got tired and just bought jarred  baby food int he grocery store...

  • Can't wait to see how Jack takes to green beans!

  • yay for you making jack's baby food! i know i haven't commented in forever, but this post i just couldn't pass up on. you and i did everything exactly the same. magic bullet, ice cube trays, green beans to start, etc. let me tell you, that it's SO worth it to make all of jack's food homemade like this! in my opinion, that's probably why xander wasn't sick at ALL until about 15.5 months! xander actually never had jarred baby food ever because i always had tons of baby food stored in the freezer in little cubes. so easy to just pop them out to thaw.
i also recommend wholesomebabyfood.com i got a lot of great ideas and tips from that website. you're a great mom! keep it up!

  • That is like soooo awesome!  I love June!!!  She is like the best sis ever!  And now you are making me want another baby b/c I always wanted to make my own baby food but Chris thought it was a dumb idea and the fact that I only own a blender adds into that.  But now I wanna make my own baby food and have no baby to try it out on!  Wah!
I can't wait to hear more about your 'baby food factory'!  :D

  • Ice cube trays for necklace storage! How come I didn't think of that first??? And the Magic Bullet? I'm way behind in the housemaking trends. I have never own a food processor. =O I know, shocking huh? I kept telling myself that I am not ready for it (i.e. my cooking skills are not good enough to deserve such ownership), but maybe I need to own one to be a better cook, who knows. Anyway, I think it's so sweet that your sister anticipated your move and got you the cube and recipe book. By the way, I got my first cali interview! This is a position in Stanford so I won't be able to drop by to visit, but maybe later!

  • Those are SO cool!  You know, I never knew that half of this stuff existed...I do love my Magic Bullet, though.    Jack'll be eating well!

  • That's awesome. I plan on making my own baby food too. You can let me know how it goes.

  • I like the food trays!  I am using ziplock baggies and I have to say that they don't look so pretty in my freezer!  I almost bought a magic bullet but I didn't know anyone who had one and I already have a food processor.  So far Rylan has had rice and butternut squash.  He loooves the squash!  Yay for you...sucj a good mommy!

  • Wow, so creative! I would have never thought of that.

That Jack, what a lucky kid! =)

  • what a fantastic idea! i'm going to file this away for when i have a baby. :)

  • Call me a huge dork, but I LOVE puns...yours was pretty superb.

  • Jack is so cute!  He looks like such a happy baby.  You're lucky to have such a good sleeper ... I can't wait until Olivia can sleep 10-12 hours in a row.  12 hours in a row seems unbelievable right now!!

Making baby food looks like fun!!  What a good mommy you are for making him such wholesome food.  Now I want a Magic Bullet ... even tho I already have a little and big cuisinart!
