  • Yet another week begins ...

I'm feeling rather blah today. Another week stretches ahead! My mom left for Taiwan with my dad this weekend. She'll be there until the end of March, at least! It's great for her, but I miss her already, and I know she's sad that by the time she comes back, Jack will be crawling around.

This weekend, we mostly relaxed. We went to the airport to see my parents off and to show them Jack's new eating skills. Jack ate very heartily, and my mom fed him before she got on the plane. We spent the rest of Saturday at home and took Jack to the park. The weather was so nice ... like in the 70s, so everyone was out.

Yesterday, we went to the Westside Pavilion mall. There was a play area at the food court with sturdy but soft plastic "food" items for the kids to play on, like giant banana slices, a hollow soda cup on its side (to act as a crawling tube), a humongous hot dog in bun and an ice cream cone. Kids ran around and played among the giant food while parents chilled on cushiony benches around the perimeter of the play area. There was also spacious stroller parking around the play area. Of course, Jack is too young to be crawling or running around, but loved watching all the activity. He kept laughing at the other kids, and he almost leapt out of our arms several times, so eager was he to join the action. I think he's going to be an outgoing kid. Surprise, anyone?

The other highlight to report is that June auditioned for the Asian version of American Idol! That's the best way to describe it. They held one of their auditions in the LA area, and June says she's never seen so many Asian pop-singer-wannabes in one place. Just for her time slot, there were more than 500 contestants. They were narrowing down to five people to send to Taiwan for the next phase of the contest. By the time they got to June (number 300-something), they were really short on time. They asked most people to leave the stage after less than 30 seconds of a song. If they liked you, they asked you to sing a second song. If they really liked you, they asked you to sing a third song. June got really nervous watching everyone else because the judges were really brutal (again, think American Idol-style brutal!). Well, she got on stage, and made it through her first song. To her surprise, they asked her to sing a second song. Then they asked her to sing a third song!!! She ended up singing two Chinese songs and one English song. Afterward, the judges told her that she had a great look and all the right material, and that her voice was great, but not polished enough yet. So then she went backstage, where a reporter asked her a whole bunch of questions -- I'm sure they were happy to see a genuinely pretty girl out of the hundreds of so-so people there! (June is very modest, but I can brag on her because she's my sister! ) So, we don't think she'll be chosen as one of the five, but I think without any formal training, it's pretty great that she was asked to sing three songs and was told that all she needs is some more work on her voice!

What else? Oh, Johnny and I are going to have our nanny babysit Jack this Friday night so we can go out to dinner and to see I Am Legend, which we've been really wanting to see. I do think it's really important for couples to go out every once in a while ... lately we've both been so busy with work, school (for Johnny) and Jack that I can't remember the last conversation we had that wasn't related to Jack or logistics for the day! On Saturday, as we sank into bed at 10 p.m., exhausted, we recalled with amusement that just a year and a half ago, we used to get ready to go out to bars with friends at 10 p.m.!

And finally, a question for you moms out there. Did your babies go through a weird phase (when it comes to sleeping) at six months? As you know, Jack's always been a great sleeper, but lately he's been waking up a lot earlier than usual. Before we started the oatmeal, there were a couple of days where he woke up at 4:30 a.m. (as opposed to his former 6:30 a.m.). After the oatmeal, it's been more like 5:30 a.m. He's already eating the most he wants to eat during the day, and we're putting the last meal as late as we can. He sleeps straight through from 6:30 p.m. on to 5:30 a.m., eats and then goes back to sleep until about 7 a.m. My nanny told me that this is temporary, and Jack will go back to his usual waking time after this growth spurt. Have you guys found that to be true? Or are we slated to wake at 5:30 a.m. from now on? I feel so spoiled, but I'm used to Jack sleeping 12 hours at a stretch at night, not 11! I like my last hour of sleep. Tee hee. Also I've noticed that he's really getting quite a workout in his sleep. He'll roll over in both directions, creep from one end of the crib to another, raise his butt way up in the air -- it's like he's practicing new skills in his sleep. I guess he works up an appetite! (Maybe I should start working out in my sleep, too ... I'd have a super-toned body in just days if I worked out for 11 hours a day. Ha!) I'd appreciate hearing from you guys if you've experienced the same things with your babies, and how long that lasted. Thanks!

  • As much as I would love to help you answer your question about sleep phase -- I was never lucky enough to have a child who sleeps more than 4-5 hours at a time, especially at 6 months, but it sounds to me like you and Johnny are spoiled with Jack's sleeping habits!!!!

  • I love hearing about your life!  You tell it so well.  In any case, good for June!  That's pretty amazing, and I can't believe she got up the nerve to actually do it..I give the girl so much credit!  Jack will certainly be "earning" his calories, won't he!?    What an active little guy.

Just thought I'd let you know, too, that Chicago is a definite go for us in July!  Jake accepted the U of Chicago's offer over Northwestern, which was hard...and we laughed because he could name about six people that would love to kick his butt for doing so...please don't hurt me.

  • wow, I can't believe June made it to 3 songs and out of all those ppl!!!  She is very pretty indeed, how fun!  I love American Idol, it starts this week and I love watching bad singers in the first few weeks hahaha.

I'm feeling blah today, I think its that time of the month.  And hey, congrats on weighing less and less, I want to be 120 as well.  Its not easy!

  • Yay for June!

I know with Emilee, she had a period of a week or two where she stopped sleeping as long. It soon went back to normal. Christian's had his growth spurts, too... where he'll sleep really well for a while and then not sleep as long. It's been a tiring *almost* six months for me at times, but I love it! I'm sure that Jack will go back to normal soon. Oh, and it's hilarious what babies do in their sleep!! Emilee still sleeps with her butt up in the air (and Christian has learned that new trick, too). I wish I could burn that many calories in my sleep!!

Oh, I love what fun Jack had at the mall with you guys. That's hilarious, and so something Christian would do. He is forever trying to leap out of our arms and into... well, whatever Emilee's into! :)

  • wow how do you keep up with blogginG!  Sounds great your sister can sing huh?  I used to LOVE to sing.. now I don't know any poplular Chinese songs... I'm so out of the loop.  BAH!  I'm going to be leaving for Taiwan on Wednesday.. so I'll be blogging from there.

I think still finding time for couples on their own is an absolute must! So it's great you guys are doing the movie thing...

  • I think that Jack is just going through a phase, like you said.  Steph went through one at about 11 and 12 months where she would wake up 2 or 3 times a night screaming.....or about an hour after bedtime and then not want to go back to sleep.  Now, she is back to sleeping fine.  :D
As for June, I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for you to say that she was passed on to the next round!  Give her hugs.  I would be disappointed with myself if it were me.  That is part of the reason why I don't try out for American Idol.  The other part is that I just don't have the 'look'.  I am not overweight or anything.  But I am not exceptionally pretty (DON'T ARGUE WITH ME...I am fine with the way I am.  :D )  And I would end up in a fight with Siiiiiiimmmmmoooooon.  :)   LOL!
And I am sad FOR your mom.  My Mama gets so sad thinking about not seeing her grandkids and then even sadder when she realizes that she gets to spend more time with Dylan.  :(   I still think she plans on moving over here as soon as Wal-Mart can manage it (though I think she has to wait until she has been there about a year) so I know that eventually she will be 'back home' and MeMe will be here with her grandbabies.
Oh, and don't worry about apologizing for lacking to comment on my site.  :D   I know that you work and are super busy spending you spare time with the cutest Asian-Irish boy in the world!!!  :D   No problem.  I know that you will always be my friend and be there for me.  :)

  • I'm sorry you were having a blah day. Hopefully today's looking better! It brings a smile to my face to imagine Jack doing acrobatics in his sleep. I think I'm a very lazy sleeper; if you were to take a series of pictures of me sleeping, I would look the same in every picture. I usually wake up in the same position as when I fall asleep and often sore from staying in the same position for too long! I am trying to remember if my brother's sleeping schedule changed during his 6 months time... I sort of want to say that he went through a bad stage around 5 months because my mom got a really bad ulcer when he was 6 months old from all the stress and ended up hiring a 24 hour nanny to help her out. (of course, you have to remember that my mom's also much older when she had my brother). So regardless of whether it's temporary, make sure you are taking good care of your body and that Johnny's helping out too!

Wow, I can't believe that June did so well in the singing contest. I cannot sing to save my own life and I'm always jealous of people who can!!!

  • Yeah, he'll go back to it. Just make sure you make it a low key feeding time and he'll get over it again soon. Might just be a growth spurt or something.

  • Jack is right at the age for a growth spurt so I'm sure that's what it is. He could also be teething. Hannah was always a good sleeper from very early on but when she was going through growth spurts or teething it could be kind of a nightmare. I can't believe that you can put him to bed at 6:30! When Hannah was an infant she had a very late bedtime...just because of feedings and stuff (I don't know if she really had a bedtime). Then, we started putting her to bed around 9:00 and now she goes to bed around 8:00 and that's been her bedtime for quite awhile. In bed a little after 8:00 and then up around 7:20. Anyway, didn't mean to go on and on about this...my point is that I'm sure he'll go back to his normal schedule soon

Sorry your mom's gone for so long I'm sure that's gotta be tough on both of you! Time will fly by though and you'll just have to take even more adorable pictures of Jack.

Go, June! Sounds like she did a great job and what guts!

  • Weather in the 70's...Jack sleeping for 11 hours...why are you feeling blah????  ;)

  • 125! you go girl!  That is awesome!  You've always been healthy and fit so I think your body was trained well to go back to a good weight in due time.  I always envyed those 110 pound girls who still look fit.  I think its just harder now because the last time I was <120 was in high school? haha.  I used to be a size 3 and ate McD everyday, now those were the good old days.  I am hoping that I can keep this up and yoga twice a week has helped me feel more relaxed as well...now I know why people love yoga!

thank you for encouragement.  Just curious, do you track your food and how many calories are you eating a day to be losing weight?  Also, what are some good pregym/postgym snacks?

  • Hi Beverly. Oh, I bet you miss your mom ! Don't worry, I think March will get her quickly. If it makes you feel any better, I only get to see my mom a few times a year, but we're not that close, so I'm used to it. I wish we were close like you and your mom, but oh well. That is so awesome about June! She is so talented and v. pretty-way to go!! I've been watching American Idol for the last two nights.

ryc; Thank you for the comment! You always seem to provide such helpful advice. I can definitely live with eating 3 meals a day plus one snack and a dessert. Thats awesome that you're able to watch what you eat and exercise. I think staying motivated is the hard part. Just last night I made a taco salad and it was so good, I tried to eat another one and got sick-LOL. I love food way too much. I'm gonna what you told me to do because it sounds so reasonable. I just want to be healthy, not necessarily skinny. I hate how people assume all Asians should be thin b/c I definitely do no fit the norm and never have. After being pressured from my parents to lose weight throughout my entire life, it actually backfired. I think I'll lose it on my own terms w/out any pressure. Ugh, asian parents can be so strict and stern, but I'm used to it. By the way, you look great the way you are-post baby! I wish I had your figure and healthy attitude. Hope you, Jack and Johnny have a great rest of the week!

p.s. I can't wait to see more pictures of baby Jack-I showed my sister and she agreed he is such a CUTE baby! :o )
