  • Oatmeal, yum!

    Drumroll, please ...

Jack ate his first solid food tonight! Well, "solid" is up for debate ... it was baby oatmeal mixed with warm breast milk, pretty runny in consistency. Jack's been waking up earlier in the mornings crying from hunger, so my pediatrician gave me the OK to give him some baby oatmeal. He says that unless food allergies run in the family (which they don't, in our case), he recommends starting with oatmeal because baby rice is so binding. It was pretty hard to hold out until six months for solids, not because Jack really wanted them prior to now, but because other babies were having them. However, I'm pretty bent on doing this food thing by the book (especially given all the food allergies on the rise), so six months it was!

While Johnny set up the high chair and took pics, I fed Jack in the Bumbo. At first, he wasn't sure what to make of it. He'd either open his mouth after taking the food, letting the oatmeal run out, or he would close his mouth tight. Or, he'd take the food and look up, then swallow, as though he were still drinking from a bottle. I decided to give him a break and change him into his PJs before trying again. On our second try, he suddenly got it. He started opening his mouth and leaning toward the spoon like a baby bird, then closing his mouth around the spoon, getting the food and swallowing. By the end of the session, there was hardly any spillage -- that's my boy! We went through one "bowl" (one tablespoon of oatmeal mixed with three of breast milk) and then another. He would have taken more if I'd let him, but I thought it best to cut off the initial food experience after two of those tiny bowls, in case he got way bloated. (In addition to the oatmeal, he'd also just had a full bottle.)

I am so excited. This is the start of an all new adventure for us. Johnny and I love food so much, and we're determined to raise a kid with a healthy relationship to food. I'd like Jack to have slightly better eating habits than I do. I think I eat pretty well, thanks to my mom and grandma, but I could stand to like vegetables and whole grains a bit more. Jack was already exposed to some gourmet foods in utero, and since I was pregnant with him, I've tried to take in more veggies, so hopefully he's off to a good start already. I figure that as he begins to eat more "real" foods in the coming months and years, it's also a good reason for me and Johnny to clean up our acts. If healthy, as-unprocessed-as-possible foods are what he's exposed to at home (with occasional treats, of course! What's a childhood without cake and ice cream?), then when he goes to school, maybe he won't be as tempted by the stream of junk food. That's my hope, anyway. Of course, you're also talking to the girl who disdains "low fat" and "low sugar" desserts and who has a weakness for neapolitan ice cream, Goldfish crackers, Swedish fish, Sara Lee pound cake, and all manner of baked goods, especially those made with the supremely evil white flour. So we'll see how long this health kick lasts.

p.s. For those of you who are curious, the baby oatmeal actually smelled pretty good. The way Jack was gobbling it up, Johnny thought it was full of sugar or something. Well, he tasted some, and reported that it was actually pretty bland. But Jack acted like it was the first time he ever ate anything ... oh wait, it was!

p.p.s. A random Daddy-son cute moment for you -- the first shoulder ride!

  • I can't believe he's starting solids already! It seemed as though yesterday he was born. Yey! Jack's such a smart boy!

  • Yay - finally I can comment! It's been really busy at work, and I've been crashing when I've gotten home each night, but on my lunch breaks I've been catching up on Xanga. However, every time I've gone to comment on anyone's page, I can't ever get the comment page to load!

I can't believe how fast Jack is growing up! He's so adorable. I love all the pictures of him sitting up by himself, and the picture of him and daddy is so sweet (Chris can't wait for when he can do that too!). It'll be interesting to see how Jack's tastes develop. I like trying new things, and I was that way right off the bat, according to my mom - except for bananas. From the first time she tried to give me banana baby food, I would always spit it out. Up through high school, I hated them. Now that my tastes have developed more, I love banana bread, and absolutely love fried plantains, but can't stand anything else banana-flavored. Keep us posted on Jack's culinary adventures!

  • How exciting Beverly! I'm so glad he gets to eat solid foods now. That should be so much fun!! He is growing up so fast and the pictures are adorable! :o )

ryc: I've tried online dating in the past which didn't turn out so great, but I'd definitely consider giving it another go after what you said! I think Eharmony is a good one.

  • The world of solids is a whole new exciting place.  Woohoo for Jack doing so well his first time!!  I can't wait to hear about how he is when you start to explore other foods.  Mya was great in the beginning, but since we transitioned to table food is totally anti-vegetable.  She loves fruit though.

  • awww, i remember i first gave my baby solid was rice cereal... but oatmeal is very good. very nutritious... i see he sit still on the bumbo seat...with the tray and everything...

wow, the last picture, he opened his mouth wide for his food...

  • I did the same with Kailyn. But, she was allergic. Which is SO weird because that doesn't run in our family. I would give her the cereal, and about two hours later, she'd be THROWING UP. It freaked me out so much, bc it sounded like she was choking! Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't even know why Kailyn was such a chunky baby! lol. She only had breast milk for about 7 months, bc she hated baby food. lol

Kailyn just said Hi to Jack, and tickled his picture! lol. =)

  • Yay, another new milestone! Bring on the steaks and porkchops! I actually started Tyson on oatmeal last week (3.5 months). He is underweight for his age, so the doc said I can start anytime. He didnt take it very well, so I've decided to try again in 2 weeks when he is 4 months old. Now that I'm back at work, I hope to start posting again (on my other site), so stay tuned for updates.

    Have a good weekend!

  • Awwww! That's great that he took to it so well I think we started Hannah at around 5 months and I remember how runny that first feeding was! We gave her rice and she also did very well with it and couldn't wait for the next bite. She's pretty much been the same about food ever since I think after that first feeding I made the cereal a bit thicker because I couldn't stand trying to keep it on the spoon!

The picture of him and Johnny is so precious

  • Just browsing new sites and thought I'd say Hi

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Jack! Today oatmeal...tomorrow pinkberry!!!

  • Way to go, baby Jack!
I am glad I gave my kids a lot of different foods when they were little. Get it in before he discovers McDs french fries. That's the moment it ends!

  • Jack is so cute.... hehehe

  • Awsome!!! he looks so cute in the last picture with his mouth open wide! now is when jack and atari will become best friends... a bite for jack... a bite for atari. i am so glad that he liked it so well.

  • Yay Jack! We started cereal 3 days ago.... Christian just LOVES it! He makes the same face every single time we give him solids, no matter what it is... and then about 3 bites in, he opens his mouth super wide and CRIES if you don't put it in his mouth fast enough for his liking. Too funny!

I love the Daddy shoulder rides! Christian had his first about a week ago, and I remember Emilee LOVING that... I can't ever do it, though; I'm always afraid that I'll drop them on the floor on the dismount!

  • YAY for solids!!!!  He makes me smile so big when I see him.  :D   And then you started talking about Johnny saying that the oatmeal didn't smell that bad and I was thinking, "No, no, no, NO!  Don't try it!"  LOL!
I got the OK from my pediatrician to start Thade on some cereal at 4 weeks b/c he was eating 6oz bottles every 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  It was really stressing me out (and my sis b/c she was moved in and helping out as a nanny) so my Mama told me to talk to the pediatrician and he told me to do that.  Thade was a PIG!  But you wouldn't know it now.  He constantly says, "I wanna eat."  But he never wants anything that you offer.  He rarely eats supper (and we have  a party when he does.  :D )  Sissy got started on cereal at about 3 1/2 months if I am correct.  I did hers b/c she was having problems being gassy at night and the cereal fixed that problem.  My pediatrician give the general OK to start cereal, veggies, and fruits at 4 months for most.  But then there are special circumstances.  I wasn't worried about allergies b/c I was started on cereal before I was 2 weeks old....along with all my other cousins.  I don't understand their reasoning behind the allergies anyway.  I mean, for years and years I loved strawberries.  Turned 18 and all of a sudden I was allergic to them.  You can develop an allergy for any food at any time over the course of your life.  My aunt loves mushrooms, but developed an allergy for them like I did strawberries.  I figure if my kids are going to develop an allergy, then they are going to develop an allergy.  They are fine, and besides Thade's phase with eating, they both eat VERY heartily.
It sounds like I am like you when it comes to weaknesses for food.  Though, I have learned to accept a slightly bland muffin as a snack (substitute for cupcake,  :D )  And I usually try to have two veggies and a grain with dinner.  Usually.  But that is from the way I was raised.  Mama always made a meat and two veggies.  The bread comes from the way Chris was raised by always having bread with dinner.  :D
I know that it is inevitable, unless I raise a health nut and scare them about what is in junk food could KILL them, that they are going to have weaknesses and choose the candy bar over the muffin sometimes.  I don't mind.  But the minute they start putting on some pudge......outside to excercise they go.  I will not tolerate them being fat like their dad!  Sounds mean, but we all know how I feel about Chris' obesity and my children will NOT be obese.  That, to me, is gross negligence!
Ok, I think I am getting off topic.  Only had a sip or two of coffee so not totally functioning.
    Love ya!

  • yaay! big congrats to jack! i know i probably say this everytime you post a picture of jack but i can't help saying it so here i go again...he's sooooooo CUTE!

so did the oatmeal help in keeping him full longer? babies are always happy to try new foods and get a different tastes aside from the same menu of milk all the time. it only gets funner and funner now!

  • BEV! These pictures are so cute. I can't believe he's eating real food already. Seems like time just flew by. I'm also SUPER excited I'm engaged! Okay, the next thing to work on will be the babies!

  • I love gourmet oatmeal (the freshly made one in milk with raisin and cinnamon), so I was a little diappointed to hear that the baby one's rather bland. I guess Jack will have many opportunities to try good food later. I too think that love for food is one of the best quality a person can have (provided that the person also has the genes for self-control). I went to a seminar on toddlers and food a couple of years ago. Apparently toddlers go through a stage where they suddenly start saying no to trying new food. The researcher who did the seminar explained that there is evolutionary advantage to reject new food (avoid ingesting something poisonous) but ultimately, consistent exposure and familiarity will lead to liking. When I was young, my parents always have a rule of eating every dish on the table even if I didn't like something. Thinking back, I think that was a very smart strategy. I would suggest you expose Jack to a lot of veggies and whole grain earlier on because those type of food require more exposure. Kids usually like meat right away because of the protein content (again, I think that's evolutionary/biological).
