Another Xanga Meeting, Interesting Couture and More
It was another eventful weekend!
Friday, Johnny and I did nothing (our favorite activity these days). We had a little date at California Pizza Kitchen (not necessarily one of our favorites, but it was where we had our first date in Chicago, so occasionally we like to revisit it), then conked out immediately upon coming home.
Saturday, we ran some errands and then met up with June and Charles for lunch. The four of us hung out for a bit, then went to Costco. I'm always amazed by how much money I manage to spend there. Johnny and I got a 24-pack of bottled water, some toilet paper, some Kleenex, toothpaste, contact fluid and Claritin, and it came to over $100. Granted, now we won't have to buy any of those things for the next few months, but the individual items always seem so cheap. It's the same way with Target. Somehow I walk away much poorer after visiting that store -- shouldn't it be the opposite away around?
That night, we met up with Wa and Tammy at Novecento (since Sarah and Jason took us there, it's become one of our favorites!) in Culver City. Tammy was in town visiting her friend Mike, who lives in Irvine, and Wa drove over to our side of town. It was great to meet two more Xanga friends -- we all had a lot of fun! Wa was very sweet and brought gifts for me and Tammy (my gift was three adorable bibs, one very luxurious Classic Pooh light blue blanket and two wee pairs of socks). Here are some pictures from our evening.
Here I am, opening Wa's gift

Today, Johnny and I helped out at UCLA's admitted students day, where the business school hosts admitted students from all over the country, so they can get a flavor of the school to help in their decision-making. You may remember when Johnny and I attended the same event a year ago -- it's hard to believe that a whole year has gone by! Since it was so helpful for us last year, we decided to volunteer with the Joint Ventures club, which is the club for students and their significant others. Actually, Johnny and I are co-chairs with a few other folks for next year; should be fun! We spent the morning answering questions from significant others of admitted students -- mostly about how busy the students would be, rent, transportation, stuff like that. Then there was lunch and a wine tasting for the significant others. I got plastered at last year's wine tasting, but alas, this year I stuck to water.
In between lunch and the wine tasting, Johnny and I wandered into the Fowler Museum on UCLA's campus. They had some very interesting couture on display. Let me ask you: What do these dresses have in common?
Yes, that's right -- these dresses are all made out of ... condoms!!! Can you believe it?! We were so fascinated. From outside the gallery, I just thought they were pretty couture gowns. Then we walked in and realized what they were made of -- the handiwork was really great! It was part of an anti-AIDS campaign, and the designers used condoms that didn't meet quality or safety standards. I thought it was really clever. I was amazed at the different looks and textures the designers were able to achieve -- who would have thought of cutting open, stretching, fusing and dyeing condoms to make a fabric?
Here is a close-up of that first gown -- you can really see the condoms
I loved that you could just walk into a museum on the UCLA campus and see this.
Hope you all had great weekends!

It was a lot of fun meeting you and johnny. I still think it's hilarious how we know so much about each other and it's the first time we met. I wish we had more time to hang out... but we'll have a lot of chances in the future since we're not really that far from each other.
So back to the daily grind huh? Poo. Not looking forward to it. ... this weekend went by way too fast.
okay.. have a good night~
hey Beverly! I had so much fun chatting with you and Wa like old friends and Johnny is just such a sweetheart! I could really see how much he cares about you by the little things he does...it just warms my heart:) I am too tired tonight to post pictures but will be posting tomorrow night for sure. I can't wait for you and Johnny to come up in April...if you have time we will all get together for dinner or a show:) Thanks for Pinkberry...I think I am an addict now...I keep on telling Mikey today...you know...I could really use some pinkberry right now haha.
have a great week, talk to u soon! Hugs!
i rally like the third dress, condoms or not. LOL
omg..it's been a year since you guys went out there? holy moly. time flies! looks like it was fun for another xangameet! :-*
My favorite part of your post is the pics of the dresses! Who knew? As a seamstress (kinda), I cannot imagine sewing any of those together. They would really mess up your machine! Or did they find some other way - you mentioned fusing - to get them "together?' ha!
Wow! I didn't even notice they were condoms at first! Cool idea!
WOW that is awsome and sorta gross at the same time. of course i cant believe all the colors they come in
I thought they were made out of plastic shopping bags at first. WOW. That is amazingly crazy! But very impressive!
I guess you can have safe sex wearing one of those dresses.
Those dresses are fascinating! It amazes me that people come up with ideas like that.
My boyfriend's school actually has a Wives Club. Apparently it has always been called that, even though now members include significant others, male and female. I was so offended by that, but I think I would be even more offended if I was a female student and I wanted my husband to join. The Joint Ventures club sounds much better, ha!
A friend of mine was telling another friend of mine (who's GF is pregnant) about how when she was pregnant, she'd hold up a bright flashlight to her tummy, and the baby would start kicking at the "light" (I guess it shows up as an orange glow to them).
How neat! Have you heard about it? If you try it, lemme know... I find it neat that people are trying to figure out ways to communitcate with their little ones.
sounds like a fun weekend!! I can't believe all those dresses were made out of condoms...wow. That's impressive! cool pics, thanks for sharing!!
and thanks for your sweet comment!
Hey Beverly - what a fun weekend and how great to meet more great xanga friends! I can't believe those gowns were made out of condoms! How clever! Anyway, I'm off for the day - its my sisters birthday and I have to go pick her up. I hope you are doing well and I will talk to you soon!
Wow, when I saw the first one I thought maybe it was corn husks so then I thought maybe they were all made out of food items...boy was I wrong
I'm glad you had another good Xanga meeting! I like your idea of you guys coming to Jersey and the guys watching the kids while we go have our make-up "bachelorette" party
Ooh, I just read the comment about using a flashlight on your tummy. I actually did that with Hannah when she became breech to try to get her to turn toward the light (I had read to give it a try). It does make them move around more - although at that point Hannah had pretty much run out of room.
I'd never guess those dresses were made out of condoms! (I thought they were made out of fish scales or candy wrappers.) I wonder if the color is from the original condom or dyed... hmm... and did they use scented ones...? =P That's wonderful that you get to meet all these xanga friends; hopefully we'll meet one day before you get bored of seeing online friends in person!
Haha - those dresses are too funny!!!
Makes me wish I'd chosen a more "creative" career...
We traveled the Bay from Palo Alto (Stanford U) to Berkeley (UC) and then spent two days in Napa Valley along with the requisite visit to San Francisco...we were so close to so much else, but only had so many days!
Hey Beverly! Those dresses are unbelieveable! I had to take a second look and wouldn't have know what they were made out of unless you said something ha! I'm glad you got to meet more xanga buddies-how neat! I hope you and the baby are doing well!
)
wow! i love it when people make stuff out of unconventional materials!
RYC: I will be right at 13 weeks. This will be my 2nd appointment and technically my first appointment with my doctor. I am so excited because I really at least want to hear the heartbeat or see my little one! I am wondering when my ultrasound will be when I get to find out what it is. I should be seeing my doctor every month now and the next month I will be 17 weeks. I figure it would be at my next appointment because then I will be 21 weeks. We should be able to see the sex, as long as he/she will cooperate!
