  • Watermelon Baby!

Those of you who know Johnny well know that he has an alter-ego, Watermelon Man. (Sorry if I'm embarrassing you, sweetie!) There have been entire movie series devoted to Watermelon Man and his buddies. Well, today, I'm proud to introduce to you Watermelon Baby -- at 19 weeks and six inches long, Baby O'Neal is the length of a slice of watermelon, according to my pregnancy countdown book. However, Babycenter.com says it's more like the length of a small zucchini. That seems a bit too phallic to me, though (hey, I'm pregnant, but I'm still depraved!  A big reward goes to the person who can pick my mind up out of the gutter), so I'm going to stick with watermelon slice.

Edit: Several of you have asked why babies are compared to food in these weekly emails I get from Babycenter (and in the pregnancy countdown books). I think it's probably because that provides an easy reference point for most people -- instead of "the baby's about X millimeters long," it's easier to imagine the size of a grape. Now that it's a measurement in inches, it's also easier to imagine it being as big as a watermelon slice or zucchini (at least for me -- I'm not that great a measurements!). Now, the interesting thing is, did you know that doctors predict the weight of the baby while it's in utero by comparing how your baby feels (when your belly gets big enough) to how a 5-pound sack of flour feels? Crazy, huh?!

In exciting news, I've continued to feel occasional flutters from Watermelon Baby. Yesterday, I was sitting at work, and there were lots of flutters -- I was so excited! I can't wait for the definite kicks to start. And, it's only eight days until Gender Day! (Yesterday, a coworker asked when I'd find out the sex of the baby, and I blurted out, "Nine days until sex day!" She started laughing, and I realized that that didn't sound so great when shouted out at the office!) Also, baby can hear now -- so we've been talking to it even more. Last night Johnny and I tried our hand at making up a bedtime story to tell our baby. I can't say it was worthy of making into a book, but we had lots of fun making up the story. Besides my conversations with Johnny, I think what the baby hears most during the day is my typing, conversations with my mom (hey, maybe that will give the baby a head start on learning Mandarin!), the Beatles (currently Johnny has a Beatles CD in our RAV4) and the sound of me eating.

Oh, and a happy belated Valentine's Day to you all! Our Valentine's Day was low-key this year -- we typically don't do it up, since we're pretty cheesy about each other all year round, but Johnny did send me five cards over the course of the day, starting with one on my nightstand when I woke up. I got a single rose, and next week, we are going to dinner at the Melting Pot -- yummy! I got Johnny a small box of See's chocolates and a card. The reason we didn't do our fondue dinner last night was that we had to drop Atari off at my aunt's before leaving for Sequoia with my family. We were going to drop him off tonight, but I had an appointment to have dinner with a client (that ended up being postponed, so instead I have tonight to watch Grey's Anatomy and The Office! And, um, Smallville, a guilty pleasure).

Tomorrow, we leave for Sequoia with my parents, June and Charles. I have a couple of conference calls to take from home in the morning, but by 10 a.m. I should be free to hit the road! I'll be back next week with some giant tree-hugging pictures.

  • Thank you for your encouragement:)  Yeah, I don't go overboard...but I do think I am more diligent than most people and I think sometimes when they see me being so on top of it and they are not, they feel guilty, so they tell me to stop haha.  That's because I"m like that.  If I am eating a piece of cake and my coworker is eating an apple I'll try to con her in eating a little cake so I don't feel guilty haha.

So happy for the Watermelon baby and still counting down until "sex day" haha.

Have a wonderful trip and Happy Chinese New Year!  My parents are coming to visit and we are going to Carmel and Santa Cruz:)

  • Why do they always have to compare babies to food?

  • I like the watermelon size better too.  Can't wait to find out if it is a girl watermelon or a boy watermelon!  And take tons of pics for us!!!

  • "Nine days until sex day!" - I almost spit up my coffee laughing at that one ;)

Are you going to raise the little slice of watermelon speaking both Mandarin and English?

    Have fun in Sequoia!

  • Babies and food, they go together, right?  Can't wait until "sex day" either!  Be sure to take tons of pictures this weekend and have fun!!

  • Hahaha 9 days till sex day!!! 3 more days till sex day for me too! ;)

Hehehe I was wondering what if they compared it with cellphones? You know, to be technology savy. The baby is now the size of a samsung S350. Now it's the size of a motorolla L2. Now it's the size of a 1998 cellphone shown on the x-files.

  • p.s. we camped in the sequia forest!!! It was FREEZING cold and there were many warnings of bears....

  • yay for gender day :) and as for sex...ummm GO FOR IT.  sorry that was probably a little to graphic but hey just because you are pregnant doesnt mean you cant get any. and when you are getting near your do date they recommend it b/c it helps you go into labor. but not just sex its the orgasm to (sorry that was graphic) Hope that helps

  • looking forward to seeing those pics from Sequoia!!

  • hooray for sex day. it's so neat to know ur baby can hear now. play music for it to hear! classical music would be good, and my dad apparently sang to me when i was in the womb too.

  • Yay for the Watermelon Baby.  LOL!

  • How exciting that the baby's starting to move around more!  Pete and I are actually celebrating Valentine's Day tomorrow at the Melting Pot - so yummy!

  • So many exciting things! "Sex Day" is coming, the baby is moving around, and you gave Johnny See's for Valentine's Day! Sorry, as a CA native that excites me We're starting to get it here in NJ, but no stores where you can pick and choose your own.

I think they compare babies to food because that's all pregnant women think about

What did you think of Grey's Anatomy!? I can't wait 'til next week! We watch Smallville, too, but we haven't watched last nights yet.

That's so sweet that you and Johnny made up a story for baby I used to catch myself talking to my belly all the time.

Have a great time in Sequoia!

  • Hey Beverly!! You're so funny- I clicked on the link and started laughing! That is so neat about the baby!!  I love how you compare it to fruits and veggies! I cannot wait until you find out the sex of the baby-how exciting!  Some couples choose not to find out until the end, but i think that is nuts! I'd like to know so I could pick out baby clothes and baby decor.

And Johnny sounds so romantic! I can't believe he did that all for you on Valentine's Day-how sweet!!!  Y'all are such a cute couple and thanks for wanting to be my sugar dumpling-LOL!  I'm glad you had a a great V-day. I ended up making sausage jambalaya and eating on my couch in my pjs.  Aren't ya jealous?

Anyways, I totally missed Grey's Anatomy and i heard something BIG was gonna happen, like a major character was gonna get killed off. I have class on Thurs, so I never get to watch it.  Can you tell me who got killed off?  I'm so behind on that show!

OH and I love the way you write!  Don't you have your masters in journalism? I'm taking an advanced power writing course right now which I hate b/c I'm so sick of writing papers! Yesterday we went over grammar and I just wanted to sigh and roll my eyes. All that stuff I learned in undegrad, but I guess its a refresher course and now its so stupid b/c I'm taking the class at the end of the program which should've been at the beginning.  I think you would enjoy it since you like to write and do it for a living!

Geeez, I've written a novel!! Hope you, the baby and Johnny have a great weekend chicadee!! :o )

  • Thanks for the baby update - and hope you have a great trip this weekend!  Hoping you'll have some great pics to share...

  • I can't believe SEX DAY is coming up!!!

John and I bought our plane tickets - we're going to be in LA from Feb. 23 - 25.  Hopefully you can meet up with us either Friday night or Saturday night - more than likely Saturday nice we're landing at 9 PM.  Anyway, I hope you are having a great weekend and I will talk to you soon!

  • yay for more baby movements!! that is so exciting! Hope you all are having a good trip! yay for Sex Day (this week, right?) that is too funny, and I know you'll must be so thrilled about finding out!

RYC: We watch the Office too, I must have forgotten to mention it by accident! I love how they tricked Dwight into thinking Jim was a Vampire, lol!
