Dearest Baby Surprise (I would use your name, but Daddy and I haven't announced it to the world yet),
I just wanted to let you know that your Daddy has this coming Thursday and Friday off from work for the Fourth of July holiday. Since his company lets him have five days' paternity leave, it would be most convenient if you could arrive late Wednesday night or sometime on Thursday, so that Daddy can have the four-day weekend and
then the whole next week as paternity leave. Wouldn't it be nice to have an extra few days with Daddy? Jack had a whole
year when Daddy wasn't working full-time. Here's your chance to claim four days!
OK, if you're not ready to come tomorrow or Thursday, that's fine, too. A Fourth of July birthday might be neat. If you don't want to share your birthday with a national holiday, you could choose to share it with your Grandpa and come on July 6. Beyond that, the only other option I'll give you is July 8. See, then your birthday could be 07/08/09 -- very consecutive, very neat. I
suppose you could want to be punctual just like Jack, and come on your due date of July 11, in which case you'd share a birthday with Daddy's awesome cousin Catie. If you're one day late, you'd share a birthday with your older brother. Really, after reviewing all these options, I think your best bet is to arrive either tomorrow or Thursday, OK? Consider this your eviction notice (but only if you can make it out safely).
I know it is really comfortable in there, and while Mommy has truly considered it a great honor to carry you for 38 weeks and three days, it's time to make your way out. See, I'd much rather kiss your sweet little limbs than have them wedged into my ribs. Plus, don't you hear Jack having all this fun out here? (Or maybe the loud ruckus frightens you. Hmm.) Anyway, if you come out tomorrow or Thursday, I promise your first solid food can be some kind of sweet fruit, instead of green beans like Jack had.
Well, Mommy knows that in the end, you're only coming when you're good and ready. The truth is that whenever that time is, is the perfect time. Know that you're very loved already, and we're all waiting eagerly for your arrival!
~ Your loving but extremely impatient Mommy
p.s. Did you know that if you're born on the first of the month (that would be tomorrow), then when you retire, you'll most likely be able to receive your retirement benefit payments faster than all your other colleagues who were
not born on the first of the month? Just something to keep in mind, baby!

I love the notice! I hope Baby Surprise times his arrival so Johnny can take the extra time off. Glenn only got one night off when I had Alexa (the night we were in the hospital) and I sure wished he would've been around more. I'm sure he did too!
Although I think today would be a good day, as I have a "thing" for babies due in July who decide to come in June ;)
Haha, what a cute letter, Beverly! So cute. You make great points...let's hope that baby appreciates having a wise mother at such an early age.
I can't wait to hear the name you guys have chosen, too!
@Kristen - Oh, I know, I would LOVE for him to come today. Keep your fingers crossed, please!
haha, that was a little crazy :P
i'm sitting in clinic, waiting for patients to come.. lalala
btw don't forget to text me whenever the baby comes, no matter what time it is!
And, Baby Surprise, your Aunt Shelly would really like you to be settled in with your family before she comes to visit!!! Just had to throw that extra reason out there
That would be pretty cool to have a birthday of 07/08/09 but I hope he comes sooner so Johnny has some extra time with him! If he's gonna take after you though then very consecutive and neat is going to work for him
Hope he comes soon for you, hun!
Well reasoned and quite persuasive! I particularly like that you are already resorting to bribery...
I'm anxious to hear that Baby Surprise is here, so I can only imagine how impatient YOU must be!
@klalaw - Oh, Kristin, don't we seasoned moms know that bribery is the key to getting our children to listen? ;)
@june - Uh, duh, of course. I'm going to text you as soon as labor starts for real. I'm actually going to ask you if you can come over to braid my hair when it starts. :)
Awww, such a cute notice! Let's hope Baby Surprise listens!
Too cute! Have they talked about inducing you possibly?
So many good points, how could he refuse? Or maybe he's holding out for cash? Why don't you try waving a $20 down there and see if you can get somewhere?
@glorycato - Ah, no, I think it's probably too early for that, since really I'll only be 38 weeks and 4 days at my midwife appointment tomorrow. Plus, the midwife group really doesn't like to induce before 42 weeks unless there's a medical reason ... and last time they checked (last week), he wasn't too big yet. BUT I admit the idea sounds kind of enticing. I think the biggest block to induction, though, is that it can't be done for a VBAC -- the induction produces contractions that are really strong and can increase the risk of a uterine rupture. So that's why VBAC candidates are always hoping to go into labor spontaneously. At this point I don't actually doubt that I WILL go into labor spontaneously, but I'm only basing that on the fact that even though Jack was breech and not putting pressure down below, I still went into labor naturally at 40 weeks. So I'm hoping that this second time around, with pressure from the baby's head down low, it also means I'd go without induction. Let's hope!
@Ann (Anabel) - Hmm, good idea! Too bad my arms aren't long enough to extend beyond the huge swell of my belly. I'll have Johnny wave some $20 bills down there tonight. ;)
@bevconeal - Oh right, because of that VBAC that makes absolute sense. I was induced 9 days early every single time because my babies were always big, so in my head it's just the thing you do, ha ha.
Did i hear somewhere having sex or sperm induces contracations? Or I might just be crazy. I think I've heard it somewhere though. Who knows if it's true. hahhaha.
Very cute letter. And I think the idea of 1st solid food is gonna be something sweet is definitely a good deal!
@My_Enigma_Heart - Oh, yeah, intercourse is one of the ways to naturally induce labor, you're absolutely right. The prostaglandins found in semen and the oxytocin when the woman reaches climax stimulate the cervix to ripen and the uterus to contract. BUT, that being said, it only stimulates labor if your body's good and ready to go into labor ... so unfortunately if baby is not ready to come out, all the sex in the world won't do you any good. :) Haha. It's a fun labor inducing technique, though!
that's such a cute letter. let's see if baby surprise gets the hint and makes his arrival this long holiday weekend. however, i hadn't noticed till you mentioned it, but 7/8/09 would be a pretty cool birthdate!! you'll have to keep us updated of when he does come. take care!
